Tropical Shore saw RKO briefly get hold of Lana for one of their own Tiki films, a chance they wanted to make the most of. Lana played the fictional Madeline Ferris, the half-Polynesian daughter of Australian Captain Ferris of the tramp steamer ''Southern Cross''. With a typhoon incoming, the ''Southern Cross'' has to help evacuate people from an outlying island and bring them to shelter in the main town but when Captain Ferris is incapacitated in an accident, Madeline must take the helm, fend off some criminals who want to hijack the ship to escape the area, and a twit of a man who thinks he's more qualified to pilot the ship than she is.
