Zeva was born the second of three children to an Aldin family of coastal merchants, and deserted their comfortable life for the seas in her late teens. She started out working her way up the ladder on trading vessels, but when her ship fell prey to pirates, she decided necessity was the better part of valour and joined the pirate crew. She met her first love, a Lar'tyan woman called Shada, on that ship, but Shada was deeply preoccupied with mortality and finding a means to escape it. While they were ferrying a Kernish artefact to an interested buyer, Shada wanted to turn mutinous and steal it for themselves, taken with the notion that it would help her towards her goal. Zeva believed she had persuaded her love to turn back from this course, but Shada carried out the mutiny regardless and escaped with the artefact and a third of the crew, leaving Zeva with a deep flesh wound and a broken heart.

In time she married an islander woman from the Scatterstars, and together they raised a daughter, Lorelei. While Zeva was aboard ship, her wife Merea took ill with a wasting sickness the healers couldn't cure, and Zeva returned to find her wife passed and her daughter in the custody of her elder merchant brother Galen. Galen disapproved of letting a mere girl of ten be exposed to the life of piracy his sister had adopted, and sought to keep the two apart and raise Lorelei in a 'proper' environment. Zeva's concession to respectability is to leave the pirating life behind and turn privateer in the service of Aldis. Though she disagrees with her brother on many things, she wants to be a parent Lorelei can look up to, and leave her with enough money to choose the finest of futures. Her ways of coming by that money might not always meet her brother's approval... but at least he'll have a harder time arguing with those letters of marque.

Zeva is in her early 40s with dark-toned skin, dreadlocked hair swept back by a scarf, and brown eyes dark as ink. She has deep scarring over her ribs from her encounter with Shada, along with the pirate's usual collection of nicks and scars, and her one concession to vanity is a set of jewel-encrusted rings with which she can give an impressive black eye.
