Lukas Faber, 40: Grew up surrounded by brothers and sisters, cousins, uncles and aunts, a huge standard German family. But the one he felt closes to was his big brother Lukas. When the war broke out, he signed up to fight. In 1918 not long before the end of the war, Lukas had his leg blown off in a shelling and was sent home with an honourable discharge. It had a profound impact on young Johan to see him strapped up and bitter at the war that took his leg.

Even to this day, Johan writes to his older brother in an attempt to keep his spirits up. And was inspired by his injury to become a doctor and save others like him.

Elsa Grantz, 25: Johan met Elsa just as he left Medical College. She was a secretary at a local manufacturing plant. After three months of passing by her office building, he finally plucked up the courage to ask her out for a cup of coffee. It was her smile that entranced him, how happy she was to be alive, with her long brown curls and her dark eyes. He set up shop, practicing medicine in the town and continuing to see her after work. Everything was perfect for about a year, until Johan asked her to marry him. She looked at him sadly and said that she couldn't marry him, but wouldn't explain why.

His pride shattered, he left the town. Instead of going back home to his mother and brother, he travelled, peddling his skills across the world.

Hans Becker, 28: Having grown up down the road from one another, Hans and Johan both knew they wanted to be doctors. They were inseperable growing up, and even more so when they went to university together. But as time passed, Johan realised that Hans had far greater ambitions than him: scientific, medical, political. He started talking about the latest discovers in the naisscant science of Genetics, and how he could cure anything with his bold surgical advancements. Johan never had the bravery to confront his oldest friend for his "cutting-edge" theories, and was secretly a little relieved when his breakup with Elsa sent him out of town.

Despite his trepidations, Johan enjoys regular correspondance with Hans, and the two have met for drinks when their towns coincide.
