While their creed was to live in harmony with nature, according to their ancient myths the Princesses had conquered the world's essence and made it their slave. The neighboring Princesses in turn had little love for an isolated group of belligerent primitives that occasionally raided any settlements they felt infringed on their forests, leaving the relations between the two groups tense even when they didn't escalate to violence. So when the Horde arrived and made war against the Princess Alliance, the People of the Land were quick to pledge their support to the newcomers. Unfortunately, they soon found they had traded one perceived evil for something that was much worse - the Horde clear cut and strip mined their ancient forests, and used their bonded animal companions - that the People considered as close as a brother or sister - as expendable cannon fodder. Finally having had enough, Wilde stole away one night, intent on fighting against the Horde and one day restoring his people's lands and way of life - even if that meant siding with the hated Princesses. The Princess Metalla was in many ways Wilde's opposite - finding her lands completely surrounded by the Horde, and cut off from reinforcements, she reluctantly joined in return for the protection of her subjects. But while Wilde's people clashed with the Horde's ways, Metalla found it a perfect place for her aggressive nature and powers to control and shape metal. She was soon promoted into a position of command, and Wilde felt she took particular glee in oppressing the People of the Land and was particularly disrespectful of their animal companions.
