Born to the Kzeem, a solitary people living in an isolated village high up in the Black Riage, Yatena was taught from an early age that she was heir to a strange legacy. The Kzeen, her parents reverently told her, were the chosen of the Glorious Ones, a race of gods who had come from the stars to bless the Earth with their sacred presence. To their treasured servants, the Kzeen had imparted great gifts of the blood that carried on through the generations - strength, valour, and the ability to recover from wounds that would have spelled death for one of the Kaz, the non-Kzeen. The Kzeen were born to a holy duty - to shed their hallowed blood for the Glorious Ones. Yatena never doubted that, because just like her kin, she could feel that duty calling out to her from the marrow of her bones. However, on the question of just how you were supposed to shed your blood for the Glorious Ones, given that no one had seen one in living memory or even quite remembered what they looked like, her elders were oddly vague. Each Kzeem had to find his or her own answer to that question, they said. Some interpreted the imperative as a commandment to go forth into the world and help the poor inferior Kaz with their gifts, just as the Glorious Ones quite possibly would have wished them to. Yatena decided that that was the path for her as well. After leaving the Kzeen village on her eighteenth birthday, Yatena has adventured through the Steadfast, taking up the cause of the weak and abused wherever she can. Brave and selfless, boisterous and perhaps not too bright, she has made an impression wherever she has gone. Many owe her their thanks, though some seem to take offense to her attitude, which she finds it hard to understand - certainly it must be obvious to all that the Kzeem are superior to the Kaz in every way, so why does everyone get so angry when she happens to mention it?
