Zig came up north to Sartar as an agent for his father. His family covertly supported the Starbrow rebellion because the Lunar occupation has been bad for the trade up north, and they have close ties to the durulz who've handled a lot of their northern transport by riverboat for generations. The rebellion failed, of course, so Zig was sent out to keep an eye on the situation, gather loose ends, look after the family's interests and, if possible, lend at least some help to their friends and allies. His father sent him, specifically, because he's capable and loyal yet, as the youngest son, relatively expendable and low-profile.

Someone like [[Drwa_Oh%2C_Duck|Drwa]] seemed just the duck for the job.
