A few base classes are not available for players to take at all, due to style restrictions or setting considerations. Rather than listing base classes that are not available, and updating the list as each new book comes out, a list of available base classes should suffice:
* All base classes in Players Handbook 1 are available for characters to choose.
* Barbarian
** Nefain is the only god to invest her power in Paladins and she does not, in turn, invest power in other divine classes.
* Bard
** Warlocks may make a Fey Pact or a Star Pact, but not an Infernal PactFey Pacts are made with lords of the Tuatha Sidhe and Star Pacts are made with giants, as agents of the lost FoimoireThe Infernal has yet to play a role in the workings of the Phantom World.
* Druid
* The character classes from Players Handbook 2 are also available, with some conditions and exceptions.
* Fighter
** Avenger
* Knight
** Barbarians arise only amidst the orcs and the Fenian tribes.
* Ranger
** Invoker
* Rogue
** Shamans and Sorcerers have no stake in the affairs of the Phantom World and cannot be chosen as PC classes.
* Scout
* The character classes from the Players Handbook 3 are not represented in Scalgard, except for the Seeker.
* Sorcerer
* Classes from specific Campaign Settings (Dark Sun, Eberron and the Forgotten Realms) are inappropriate for Scalgard.
* Wizard

These available base classes are further sub-divided by nation, as noted in The Peoples and Nations of Scalgard.  This is to preserve regional flavor, and can be safely ignored with a good reason, but note that DMs and Players will have to work harder to preserve differences between nations.

Cleric Presige Classes
To be a priest of the elemental gods of the Phantom World is to sacrifice. There is submission and strife, but also there is power. This power comes from abilities granted to the cleric as he advances in his god's service, but also in the form of minor spellcasting powers. The prestige clerics of Scalgard (and their patron gods) are:
* Cerement (Annwyn)
* Luminous (Cerithwen)
* Rime-Hag (Beira)
* Stormlord (Mannanan)

Each of the classes above offers an enhancement to existing spellcasting powers, but the ability to cast spells is not necessary to enter the gods' serviceThose without this ability instead gain spellcasting ability as a cleric of their class level.

But, to the truly devoted servant, even more potent magic awaits.  Even a character with earlier spellcasting power can advance as a cleric instead of adding to their old powerFurther, for every level a character takes in one of the Prestige Classes above, he may choose to sacrifice a defining class feature of one of his earlier classes in order to cast spells as a cleric of one level higher, for purposes of both caster level and number of spells per day, than the prestige class would normally allow. Base classes and the defining features they can sacrifice include:
* Barbarian
** Rage
* Bard
** Bardic Knowledge
** Bardic Music
** 2 Caster Levels
* Druid
** Animal Companion
** Wild Shape
** 1 Caster Level
* Fighter
** Bonus Feats
* Knight
** Knight's Challenge
* Ranger
** Favored Enemy
** Combat Style
** Animal Companion
* Rogue
** Sneak Attack
** 16 Skill Points
** Evasion
* Scout
** Skirmish
** Evasion
* Sorcerer/Wizard
** 1 Caster Level

A character who gives up a class feature knows what he has given up; he can remember that the once possessed the knowledge of arcane magic or where to strike in a sneak attack, but can no longer remember the details or explain them to others.  He has given a piece of his history and soul over to his patron in exchange for spell power. Such is the price of greater glory in service to the gods.

Note: This option exists to reinforce the flavor of the gods' greedy nature and to allow a full 6 Levels of Cleric spellcasting in a setting that otherwise would not. Careful reading will show that few characters, almost none of them physically powerful, can claim full cleric spellcasting. This is intentional.
