Background

The Venris family had an ambitious breeding program: to craft the most loyal and most skilled bridge crew for their ship. To this end, they attracted 'breeding stock' from all over the sector, promising them riches and freedom if the offspring proved valuable... Ophelia was born... well, decanted... a weak, sickly child on the Venris ship Spurius Improbus but showed remarkable alertness and spatial awareness, so they decided to keep her alive... for a while, at least. Ophelia's parents weren't so lucky... Her father was spaced and her mother locked up in one of the crew pleasure pits, a fate worse than death. Indoctrinated from the start to be absolutely loyal to her ship and her captain, she stayed the weakest child of the batch, but she made up for it with her quick wit and rose through the training curriculum... She was soon helping the Venris with their plots, with dreams of buying her mother's freedom... not knowing her mother had taken her own life years ago, during her first week in the pit.

Her current predicament is due to her previous captain, Flavion Venris's bad gambling habit... and her new captain, Varla Krydiss's cheating. When Flavion couldn't pay up his dues, Varla stood up, pointed at her and simply declared "okay, I'll just take her then!" Now she's been uprooted and introduced to the strange world of Varla's ship...
