In this formation the Sword squad acts as close assault troops armed with bolter, chainsword and specialized assault weapons of which the plasmagun is the most coveted, while the Pistol squad provides cover and supporting fire using heavier weapons with a preference for autocannon. Unique Traditions[edit]
The Slayer is actually a Chapter Serf who carries the eponymous vorpal sword, a power weapon of great antiquity, sublime beauty and power. According to tradition a young Serf picked it up from where it fell when the Chapter Master was wounded by the largest Jabberwock ever seen, and then took the monster's head in a single stroke. It is said the Serf was the Master's descendant.
From that day all Vorpal Sword aspirants are required to have children before they are taken and if those children are not Serfs they become so whether their father survives the process or not.
