The drifter planted some cards on Samwise using sleight of hand and stood up and accused Samwise of being the cheat. Before Samwise knew it he was sitting in jail waiting for the gallows for being a thief. Sam wasn't going to take that and used all his guile to spring himself from the jail.

History

Samwise was born in Gallow's Way, a strict hanging town with little sense of humor. Samwise was seen as a nuisance in the town, constantly getting underfoot and in the way. His father was the innkeep of the Hanging Thief Inn. His father wanted Samwise to learn the trade by working at the inn, but all Samwise learned was how to play dice and cards. During a rather high stakes card game an out-of-town drifter was playing (and cheating). The drifter saw a tell from the lawman that told him, the lawman was just trying to catch him in the act. The drifter planted some cards on Samwise using sleight of hand and stood up and accused Samwise of being the cheat. Before Samwise knew it he was sitting in jail waiting for the gallows for being a thief. Sam wasn't going to take that and used all his guile to spring himself from the jail.

After that Sam fled town and headed south, figuring to disappear among the orcs. He was a fair hand with a rifle, a skill he picked up by hunting small game for his father's inn. He figured if he joined up with a regiment in the South he might be able to get enough cash, to start his own pub someday (far from Gallow's Way.)
