! Background notes

| As a 20-year Bundeswehr veteran, he's spent the vast majority of his adult life in uniform, following a long-established family tradition. Since leaving the army in 2011, he's gone into business as a private military contractor, mainly doing advisory work for NATO forces.

Raised in East Berlin during the Cold War, Matthias was a conscript in the National People's Army at the time of German reunification. After the NPA was integrated into the Bundeswehr, he applied to re-join and was accepted into officer training. His army career was one of slow, steady progress through the ranks. He was promoted to Captain (Hauptmann) just prior to his deployment to Uzbekistan with ISAF; while there he was wounded on a sortie into Afghanistan, and although he recovered well, his departure from the forces followed shortly afterward.

Moira has been monitoring you for some time. And when she approached you initially you were probably skeptical, but over time she was able to convince you that Firewall could use somebody like you.

Matthias has a straightforward, businesslike manner, but has a reputation as someone who works hard and plays hard. He fences (a hobby he picked up at officer school), he enjoys both jogging and hiking, and he plays a lot of poker. He's a firm atheist, and prefers not to talk about religion at all. Unlike many Berliners, he can't stand fruity beers; he drinks Kölsch if he can get it.

Family and friends: Matthias is a person who does not form close friendships readily. Like many Germans, he finds the American (and to an extent British) custom of referring to friendly acquaintances as 'friends' strange. One of his closest comrades-in-arms from officer school, and one of the only soldiers he'd ever considered a friend, was Walther Ostendorf; Walther was killed by an IED in Helmand in 2008.

Fast forward a few months.

Matthias lives alone, and is on good speaking terms with most of the people in his apartment block, especially the concierge, but not close to any of them. He has a few regular sparring partners - all serving Bundeswehr officers, mostly Heer - at his fencing club. He's in touch with a few other people from the army, too.

Matthias is functionally asexual; he's never had any strong romantic inclinations, and is not sexually motivated to any significant degree. Both his parents are dead; he misses them, and is pleased they both lived to see German unification, and their children grown up to good careers. He has two younger siblings: a brother, Andreas, who's a stockbroker in Frankfurt am Main, and a sister, Gerda, who works for the Hamburg State Government. Long separation from them on deployment has cooled family relationships considerably; he considers himself lucky if he sees them once a year on St Sylvester's Day (New Year's Eve).

Moira recruited you some months ago, she sold you on the necessity of being a Firewall agent and how important it is for each of us to take on the job of protecting transhumanity. There's just too many threats out there, sure the TITAN's are gone but they doesn't mean they won't return. And there's reports from numerous gatecrashing expeditions which strongly suggests we aren't alone. If the TITAN's taught us anything, it's that we are weak and not ready for what the universe has to offer us.

She isn't expecting you to save transhumanity, or do something so heroic that people will talk about it for generations. Humanity is scattered across the cosomos, the government fell, the laws are different in every hab you visit. Heck, just being able to visit a friend on another hab is an effort in politics, negotiating, and favors just to get onto the other hab.

So no, you aren't expected to save us all. But you can make a difference.

Moira has been monitoring you for some time. And when she approached you initially you were probably skeptical, but over time she was able to convince you that Firewall could use somebody like you.

Fast forward a few months.

She's been checking in on you, making sure you're still reachable. You'd have thought that by joining a secret society that you'd have been asked to do something by now. Instead it's just been months of, "Hey just checking in on you!" with that beautiful smile of hers.

But that changed suddenly. It all began with, "We need to talk," being the first words out of her mouth instead of the usual friendly greeting. You know then that something was wrong.

---

What you know is that Moira is some kind of administrator for the Martian colonies. She has an office based out of Elysium and some fancy title that you can't pronounce. She essentially manages resources of the various colonies - ensuring there's enough power, food, and all that stuff. You know, the basics but very important stuff. Her insight into this gives her a very big perspective on many things, one of these things is what has triggered her activating you.

Personality-wise, she is very friendly and genuinely seems to care. You don't pickup any bad vibes or detect any deceit whenever she talks to you. But your visits have always been rather short, many of them simply via the mesh as her job keeps her glued to her desk.

She has made arrangements for you to meet at her office, and promised that a backup will be taken in case anything bad happens on your first mission.
