The are some preliminary races held in other arenas with the victators participating in the Great Arena.

Attacks between participants is expected.  Beasts are fair game.  Most riders have 6 or 7 spare mounts.
 
They races are 25 circuits of the track. 
 
The arenas are often full with non=lizard spectators because seeing the lizardmen fight each other is fun or at least gratifying.
