Death has defined Ash Wutherstrum's life. Born American, both his parents were killed very early on in his life when he was 3 years old. Ash learned to take care of himself quickly, by means of violent indoctrination. He dropped out of school when he was 15, and managed to lie and trick his way into the Army. He trained hard and well, and his size and strength proved advantageous. One night out on training, Ash and the others in his group encountered Something. Ash's memories are fuzzy, but he remembers the screaming, the yelling, and the dying. Most of all the dying. Ash woke up somewhere halfway around the world, with no memories of how he'd gotten there and four years having passed in the meantime. He was 21. Violence was all that he knew how to do, so Ash signed on to any place that would promise him food and berth and some coin in exchange for doing what he did best. His unit was killed recently, and he washed out to sea, but then there came that strange noise again, setting his nerves on fire. Ash came to in the hold of a ship bound for destinations unknown to him. Just now, the ship is pulling into the docks, and he figures people are always willing to pay for someone else to die, so one place is as good as another to earn a living, and maybe figure out what's happening to him.
