Cattle Pens[edit]
Here and there about the vullage are cattle pens; some are in meadows or fallow fields, and others are in the crofts around the cottages. These pens are bordered by tall wattle fences, supported by poles and braced by branches; or by "hurdles" (sort of like sawhorses, or police barricades, made of branches); or by hedges in a few places. The prints, and dung, of cattle are everywhere in these pastures.
One pen, near the center of the village, is where the hayward places all stray livestock, to be returned (upon payment of a fine) to the owner.
