When engaged in large conflicts the Brothers of the Vorpal Swords maneuver largely in two squad sections. The leader of this formation is the senior Brother-Sergeant and holds the title Sword-Sergeant. The junior Sergeant is called the Pistol-Sergeant. In this formation the Sword squad acts as close assault troops armed with bolter, chainsword and specialized assault weapons of which the plasmagun is the most coveted, while the Pistol squad provides cover and supporting fire using heavier weapons with a preference for autocannon. The best marksmen among the Brother-Marines are typically in Pistol squads while the more skilled duelists fill out the Sword squads.

History

Culture

Lots of sword imagery as well as favoring lightning raids. The sword is the weapon of the duelist so close combat skills are in high regard but the sword is also the weapon of the civilized warrior so they also strive to be warrior-poets. Thus they value the pen and true marksmanship as well. They don't refuse to use imprecise heavy weapons like the autocannon and heavy bolter but they relegate them to use by younger brothers and scouts. They prefer precision weapons like the lascannon, plasmagun and stalker-pattern bolter.

Notable Combat Doctrines

Sword and Pistol

When engaged in large conflicts the Brothers of the Vorpal Swords maneuver primarily in two squad sections.

Unique Traditions

The Slayer is actually a Chapter Serf who carries the eponymous vorpal sword, a power weapon of great antiquity, sublime beauty and power. According to tradition a young Serf picked it up from where it fell when the Chapter Master was wounded by the largest Jabberwock ever seen, and then took the monster's head in a single stroke. It is said the Serf was the Master's descendant.

From that day all Vorpal Sword aspirants are required to have children before they are taken and if those children are not Serfs they become so whether their father survives the process or not.
