Rick elects to stay aboard our ship, to guard her and answer the call if we need back-up at the bar.  The rest of us go, including Arden.  He states he’s not going into the bar, but waiting outside to watch our backs and our escape route.  Mike shows up packing a side arm.  He’s coming with us, too.
Arden is around the corner of the building, less visible, but not a wit less vigilant.  The rest pass inside.  Everyone has their ear comms in place and their channels selected.  Talking on the sly can ensue.  We stand a moment on the threshold, blinking in the light of the barroom floor after the long walk in the dark.
Our vision clears and we find, with some relief, the girls are fine.  They’re working the floor as bar maids, taking drink orders and cleaning off the tables.  Miss Tolson is doing the work a touch awkwardly, but you do get the sense she’s hosted parties before…just not this rustic.  Emma, however, is tackling the job with ease.
Muleskinner is still holding court at his table and there are two more denizens from town who are new to us.  A man is playing reasonably well on the out-of-tune piano and a woman a little past her prime, gussied up in gaudy saloon gear, is singing along.  Like the piano, she’s a touch out of tune but like the pianist, she’s a good enough artist to make the best of what she’s got.
Good googley, looks like the entire town’s turned out tonight.

The four freighter cowboys are at a table of their own, just sitting and drinking, sharing a bottle….and possibly waiting for something to happen.  When we walk in, their hands drop to their hips.

Sheriff Messner wanders back in with the girls, sees them to a table and joins Christian and Arden at the bar, saying he’s satisfied the girls are here of their own will.
Sheriff Messner is on duty behind the bar and he’s looking a bit like: What’s going to happen?  What do I wanna let happen?  In short, nervous.

Christian: (shocked) Oh, so we’re just going to kidnap some girls and drop them off in the middle of nowhere without asking for any money whatsoever?
Christian goes up to the pianist and asks if he might have a turn.  The other man gives up the seat and Christian puts his fingers to the keys and plays.  He plays music that is lively and that has no lyrics, giving the singer a break.  He plays the piano fairly well, despite the instrument’s need for a tuning, and under the cover of the music he asks the singer for a low-down on the situation.

Rina is there, talking with Muleskinner at his table, and she turns around.
'''Arden:''' (whispering on the comms) Just say goodbye and let’s get out of here.

Rina: (teasing) That’s what’s wrong with our scheme.  We need to work on that.<br>
Nika goes straight to the bar to talk to the SheriffRina follows and Mike takes up an unobtrusive position at the bar.
Christian: (comically) Oh, ''that’s'' what’s wrong with our scheme. We’re not collecting money at the other end.<br>
Messner:  I just wanted to be sure that you weren’t just dropping the girls off here and sending a ransom note back to their parents.<br>
Christian: (sobering) NoThat is not something we would do.<br>
Messner: Well, I’ll be willing to employ them here at the bar for a bit until they can find something to do.  There’re plenty of houses we can fix up if they’re interested.<br>
Christian: Summer said they were free to stay on her property.<br>
Messner: You mean the mine or the old Fairweather place?<br>
Christian: The old Fairweather place. It’s still in her name.<br>
Messner: I imagine we’d have to go to the assessor’s office to find out for sure.<br>
Christian: So how many jobs does the assessor have?<br>
Messner: Oh, you know, there ain’t no assessor. Not anymore.<br>
Rina: (laughing) He picked up and left fourteen months ago.<br>
Messner: No, he left a long time before that.<br>
Rina: Oh, yeah.<br>
Messner: There ain’t no assessor anymore but we keep records there to keep people from hoppin’ mines and such.

Messner looks Christian in the eye.
'''Nika:''' I just wanted to thank you for your hospitality.  We’re gonna go and head out tonight.<br>
'''Messner:''' You mind stickin’ around for a little bit.  These…people mean some trouble. I could use the extra hand…

Messner: So, here’s the thing.  You say you’re bringing them to the relative safety of the place, but there was a gentleman asking about the ship, the ''MakeMake''.
He makes a subtle gesture at the four cowboys at the table in the corner.

Rina sighs and groans a curse at the tableChristian asks for a description: Accent?  Appearance?  Arrival?  Attitude?
'''Nika:''' Not a problem Sheriff(into her comm’s pick-up) Didja hear that?

Messner says it was a Chinese gentlemanBecause the gentleman asked after the ''MakeMake'' specifically, it narrows down the list of suspects to just the one—PotemkinPotemkin wouldn’t know we’d changed the name of the ship.
Since Rina had her hand comm on and clipped to her coveralls, and was next to Nika throughout the entire conversation with the Sheriff, everyone heard it.  We get a chorus of double-clicks from everybody on our teamNika looks at Rina and then at the door.  Grokking it, Rina goes outside.  She comms Arden.
'''Rina:''' (quietly) Arden, there’s trouble.  The Sheriff’s asked us to stay.  Nika’s said yes''Tell Rick on the ship.''
'''Arden:''' I’ll be going in in a few minutes, but I’m not going to sit with you all.
'''Rina:''' Fine.

Christian: He asked for the ''MakeMake''?<br>
Rina checks her gun under her coveralls and settles in to guard the door and wait.   She props up the front rail on the porch, wishing she smoked, since a cigarette would make a perfect excuse for her to linger outside.
Arden: Did he leave a name?<br>
Christian: I hope he didn’t cause any trouble.<br>
Messner: No, he didn’t cause me any trouble.<br>
Arden: Did you tell him anything?<br>
Messner: I didn’t tell him anythingBut I’m the only one in town.

Not entirely true.  There are other people around, maybe ten or twelve of them.   There’s SummerAny of them could have talked.   Messner asserts that no matter how many people were actually in town, everyone comes to him eventually.  Christian asked if the man asked for Messner especially. No.
Back at the ship, Rick opens up the door on the upper decks cargo container best able to give him a view of the approach from town and the other ship. He sits and he wonders just what the hell sorta gang he’s fallen in withHe asks his two pigmy alligators, Evil Tick and Smudge, what they think of this oddball crew. They don’t answer, being more concerned with crawling around in the container.

Messner: NoI’ve seen good and bad.  And this seemed like an opportunistic kinda feller.  Maybe lookin’ to cash in a bounty or somethin’. <br>
'''Rick:''' YeahI think they’re all crazy, too.
Christian: The people who are responsible for the murder and the theft of the ship may have decided that they’re upset with us, and if they talked to Summer, she wouldn’t have lied to them.  It’s possible she may have run them around in a philosophical sense, but that’s fine and I hope he didn’t cause you any trouble.  And we’ll try not to bring you any more.<br>
Messner: Actually, he was droppin’ some credits in town, so he didn’t’ give us much trouble.<br>
Christian: Then we’re happy we brought you some money.

It’s possible that our arrival here may be heralded by others.  The gentleman has already left—he was here three months ago.  Arrived by shuttle.  Probably from Jibril the next continent over, but he wasn’t originally from there.  We conclude that even though we were able to help Lucifer’s Landing’s purse a touch, it’s a good bet that after all this time a Cortex wave has been sent out on us.  Christian asks how many Cortex ’boxes the community has.  Messner says they’ve got just the one at the General Store, but that doesn’t outrule the gentleman using one on his shuttle.  It’s obvious by now we shouldn’t stay here longer than we have to.  Christian invites the Sheriff to dinner on our ship, since he’s been so kind to us over the matter with the girls, and Messner accepts.  Christian asks after the assessor’s office to double check on the property records and the Sheriff says it’s right across the street.  He also offers to go with Christian, pulling the keys to the place from under the bar.  Rick, who’d been quietly watching the entire exchange, speaks up for the first time, saying he’ll go with.
Rick gets the call from Arden and makes up his mind: he closes up the cargo doors, takes his rifle and leaves the ship.  It’s pitch black out there, since there aren’t much in the way of streetlights, and he comms Arden that he’s on his way in.

The three men leave for the building opposite and Arden rejoins Muleskinner and Rina at the table.  The girls move around the room, talking quietly and pointing to this or that.  Lucifer’s Landing is a far different environment than Osiris or even Persephone and the girls are clearly trying to get a handle on the new world they’ve found themselves in.
'''Arden:''' Do you want me to wait for you?<br>
'''Rick:''' No, I’m gonna make it look like I don’t know you.

Christian comms Nika as he crosses the street.
Five minutes later, Arden moves inside the bar.  He passes Rina on the porch and they act as if they don’t know each other.  Arden finds Muleskinner’s table and sits down with the man.  They start talking about he lost his legs in the war.  Muleskinner was in the Alliance Cavalry and got hit by an ambush…and so on.
Christian is still talking to the singer.  A lot of visitors we have here tonight, he says.  Two ships, she answers.  Looks like we got their whole crews.  Plus the two nice young ladies.

Christian: We’ll be leaving after dinner.<br>
'''Singer:''' Something…(thinks better of it)  Ah…well, it’s just good to see peopleIt’s good to see people in town again. It’s been a long time since we’ve had two ships!  We’ll see what happens. Maybe things are lookin’ up for this little city.
Nika: What’s going on?<br>
Christian: A possible bounty hunter was here about three months ago and it’s a fair bet he’s bribed someone in town to report back if we ever showed upWe have a dinner engagement with the Sheriff and Miss Summer, but after that we should be prepared to take off.<br>
Nika: All right.<br>
Christian: And if there are people after us, we may want to do a little searching and see what that bounty is.<br>
Nika: Workin’ on it now.

She cuts the channel and both she and Mike jump on the Cortex.  Christian goes on to the assessor’s office with the Sheriff and Rick.
At the bar, Nika takes a seat and discreetly waves the bartender over.

Nika starts her hunt with the ''MakeMake'' as her search parameter, and she details Mike to do his with her name and Christian’s. Strictly speaking, only Nika and Christian would have been officially listed as crew.  Arden was a passenger.  Rina was a freelancer temporarily hired by Potemkin to make repairs and she wasn’t technically crew when the MakeMake left Bernadette.
'''Nika:''' Gimme a beer and tell me what you know about those guys…?<br>
'''Messner:''' (handing her the beer) Just a hunch.<br>
'''Nika:''' Great.

They find a flag issued on both ''MakeMake'' and ''Summer’s Gift'', as ships-of-interestAnyone sighting the ships should send the information to the Cortex site indicated. No flags have been issued on Nika or Christian, but the ones on the ships themselves would be sufficient for the job.
Inside, everyone seems to be getting’ along just fineOutside, Rick arrives and finds Rina on the porch being twitchy.  He passes inside and looks around for an empty table or at least a clear spot amongst them to sit down. He finds a chair near the cowboys’ table to keep an eye on them.  The cowboys seem surprised that it’s so crowded tonight and so they look nervous.  Rick leans over and comments that this place sure is jumping.  One of the cowboys asks if Rick is from around here and Rick answers no.

No bounty amount is listed.
'''Rick:''' But it’s a pretty nice place. I’m surprised that so many people left, what with all the interesting plants.  Have you seen the kinds of orchids they’re growing?

Nika looks over at Mike.
The cowboys think his comment on the interesting plants is mighty funny. It is, actually, considering the main cash crop here is cannabis.  They ask Rick if he’s from the other ship.  Yeah, Rick arranged for some transport.  He’s in the business of growing plants of the medical and ornate variety, and he’s looking to sell some plants.  The cowboy opines that this is a strange place to choose, saying that Jibril or Micah would be better venues since they are bigger cities.

Nika: So, should we send them some mail?  (taps the contact site on the screen) Wanna know what it’s worth?  Find out what they want?  Or should we just leave it be?  If the bounty gets big enough, it could be a problem.  Assuming that there’s a bounty and it’s not just a BOLO.<br>
'''Cowboy:''' So who all’s the captain of that ship?  (extends hand) I’m Bean, by the way. <br>
Mike: I guess the question is what would we do if it got really big and what would we do if it was small?  How would that change what we did?<br>
'''Rick:''' (shaking hands) I’m Rick.<br>
Nika: Probably not much of anything. Unless we’re prepped to go basically take the man out.<br>
'''Bean:''' You look kinda familiar.<br>
Mike: The only thing I think we can find out is if they aren’t interested in looking for us because they already have somebody on it right now.  But I’m not sure if they would tell us that.<br>
'''Rick:''' You know, I get that a lotIt’s pretty funny.  I have a common face, I guess.<br>
Nika: Most likely not.  The more people looking, the betterRight?  I mean, if we say hey, we’re offering ten thousand credits for information, then you have however many people who might earn ten thousand credits go and lookAnd why should I tell you I have twenty people looking?  I could have fifty people looking.  It doesn’t matter, as long as I don’t have to pay’em til they produce.<br>
'''Bean:''' Yeah.  Maybe that’s it.
Mike: (quietly) That’s probably true.

Nothing comes to mind that wouldn’t expose us further.
Rick notices the cowboys checking their watches throughout the conversation and rises, asking if they want anything to drink from the bar. They point wordlessly to their bottle: no, we’re good.  Rick excuses himself and goes to the bar for a cup of nasty.  The Sheriff asks what’s going on.  Rick tells him they seem to be waiting for someone.  That much is obvious.

Nika: Well, just leave it be for now. We know they’re lookin’ and that’s really all that’s important.<br>
So we wait.
Mike: (still quiet) Okay.

A little while later we hear Rina murmur over the comms:
Nika tells the others what she and Mike found when the rest of the crew comes back from townRina’s held off on buying a mule, considering it better to hang on to whatever credits we’ve got in case we have to cut and run.

'''Rina:''' Our potdealer is back.  He’s coming this way.

Thus forewarned, we continue what we’re doing.  Christian plays the piano, Nika sips her beer, Arden chats with Muleskinner, Rick drinks his cup of nasty at his end of the bar and Mike watches from his end.  So it’s no surprise when another gentleman walks in and we recognize him as the man who arranged our cannabis cargo for the pothead, Chong, in New Lyon on Beaumonde.  What’s he doing here?

He sees us at the bar and pretends not to recognize us, but we can tell he’s a little taken aback.  He buys a round for the cowboys at the table and then sidles up to the piano where Christian is playing something cheerful and bouncy.

'''Dealer:''' Christian Edge, right?<br>
'''Christian:''' (doesn’t miss a beat) That would be me.<br>
'''Dealer:''' I never forget a face.  Not a face such as yours.  It’s quite a site in a town like this.<br>
'''Christian:''' (smiles) You flatter me.<br>
'''Dealer:''' Well, when I can get away with it.  Can you give up your keyboard for a minute?<br>
''Christian:''' Absolutely.

Christian stands up and shoulders his rifle, thanks the singer and the pianist, and goes with the dealer to the balcony.  Summer is on the balcony and sitting in the lotus position.  Christian nods at her and continues on. He and the dealer lean on the rail and look out over the crater.

'''Dealer:''' Confucius says every obstacle is also an opportunity.<br>
'''Christian:''' Indeed, he does.<br>
'''Dealer:''' I fiund myself in the somewhat embarrassing situation of having hired a bunch of goons to beat your crew up.  However, I am perfectly happy to change that deal—<br>
'''Christian:''' If we give you a better offer.<br>
'''Dealer:''' —if you give me a better offer than the person who contacted me.<br>
'''Christian:''' To just beat us up?<br>
''Dealer:''' That’s all he wanted.<br>
'''Christian:''' There’s a whole lot of questions I have, but my immediate concern is not being physically harmed.<br>
'''Dealer:''' Yeah, I’m with ya. <br>
'''Christian:''' I’m just curious as to how you got them here so quickly.<br>
'''Dealer:''' Oh, these boys? They’re just from Jibril.<br>
'''Christian:''' So they’re relatively local. Well, how much are we talking about?<br>
'''Dealer:''' Uh, twelve hundred?<br>
'''Christian:''' How long do we have to decide on your offer?<br>
'''Dealer:''' Uh, what time is it?

It’s 20:30 hours, or 8:30 PM.

'''Christian:''' It’s not that far from nine.<br>
'''Dealer:''' Well, don’t take too long.<br>
'''Christian:''' I’ll tell you what. Give me ten minutes to speak to the captain.<br>
'''Dealer:''' You have a captain.<br>
'''Christian:''' Yes.  I am in charge of negotiations but the final decisions go to the captain.<br>
'''Dealer:''' Who is the guy?<br>
'''Christian:''' You see the lovely lady at the bar?  That’s her.<br>
'''Dealer:''' All right.

The dealer goes back inside, pats Muleskinner on the shoulder, gives the singer a kiss, and sits down at another table.  Arden asks Muleskinner who that guy was, and Muleskinner answers it’s somebody local who fancies himself an entrepreneur.  Christian goes to the bar, turns his comm channel on so he can brief everyone at the same time as he leans in between Nika and Rick to tell them what’s up.  It takes less than a minute and he asks if we can make the dealer a better offer.

Nika counters that giving the dealer our money still won’t get the cowboys off our backs.  Christian says they won’t beat us up if they’re not getting paid.  They become the dealer’s problem.  Or maybe the dealer is trying to extort money from usNika agrees it’s a strong possibility.  Also, Christian adds if we leave now, it all goes down.  So what do we do?

You know, we should’ve just taken off when we had the chance.

'''Rina:''' (over the comm) You think we should shoot them?

Her comment catches Arden off-guard and he slams his beer mug down, sputtering.

'''Christian:''' But we had to be sure.<br>
'''Nika:''' And we could’a just taken off, Christian.  Lemme finish my beer before we start the brawl, please. <br>
'''Christian:''' Sure.  But on the other hand, we know a lot more now than we knew before.  Chances are we’ll know a lot more.  If we survive this.

Can’t argue that.

'''Rina:''' (over the comm) I’ve got a full clip.  I’ve got ten shots.<br>
'''Nika:''' (into her beer) Shoot to maim, please.

Arden: If they’re offering ten thousand credits for us, I’m turning myself in.<br>
Christian turns around and orders a drink from Messner, saying:
Rina: (seriously) You sell yourself too cheaply, sir.<br>
Arden: I have that flaw.

He laughs but the joke falls flat.
'''Christian:''' Yeah….there’s going to be trouble.

During the course of the afternoon, we get the girls’ belongings transferred off the ship, Rick visits Summer again to exchange clippings and Christian holes up in the galley and prepares the best vegetarian meal he possibly can for the coming dinner.  When the moment arrives and everyone’s settled around the table, we all find out just how well he did.  It’s superb.  In fact, Rina’s melting in pleasure over the ''frikkin’ tofu''.
Nika leans past Christian to address Rick.

It’s ''that'' good.
'''Nika:''' You ready for a bar brawl?<br>
'''Rick:''' Yeah, I should be ready for a fight.

We relax and take our time with it, and conversation and the girls’ plans for rehabilitating the Fairweather office into a home flow freelyThe girls are excited and daunted by the prospect, but it’s already clear that they’ll be staying in Lucifer’s Landing.  Arden warns them that they’ll never eat as well as tonight, so fill up.  We’re still laughing over this one when some of us notice the lighter pieces of tableware vibrating. A second or two later, everyone notices as the vibrations as the dishes in the sink start rattling.
Arden quietly tells Muleskinner that he might want to get out of hereAs Nika and Rick make their plans as to who to take down first, Christian suggests the element of surprise. Why not have our mechanic come in with her gun drawn and tell them to put down their weapons?

Christian: Nika, can you go—?<br>
'''Rina:''' (over the comms) ''Excuse me?''<br>
Nika: I’m on it.
'''Nika:''' You just wanna jump ’em?<br>
'''Christian:''' I just want to cover them.<br>
'''Nika:''' Let’s just jump ’em.  We may as well get it over with.  I don’t wanna pay that yutz 500 credits.<br>
'''Rick:''' I can punch the big one in the face….<br>
'''Christian:''' I just think that if she has a gun on them before they can draw their guns, they’re less likely to draw their guns.<br>
'''Nika:''' Nobody should bring a gun to a fist fight.  That just ain’t sportin’.<br>
'''Christian:''' So you just want to jump them? Because if you do, my ability to take them on is about as good as my ability to…yeah.  I’m perfectly willing to bring a gun to a fist fight because that’s what they’re doing.<br>
'''Rina:''' Oh, hell yeah.<br>
'''Nika:''' (under her breath) Oh, frakkin’ hell…<br>
'''Christian:''' But on the other hand there’s the chance one of the innocents will be caught in the crossfire and shot.<br>
'''Rina:''' Then clear them out.<br>
'''Rick:''' You guys are crazy.<br>
'''Nika:''' You think?<br>
'''Rick:''' Maybe we could lure them to the balcony and knick them over the edge.<br>
'''Rina:''' I like that plan.

Christian warns our guests that they just might want to be somewhere not on our ship right now.  He apologizes but it looks as if trouble has found us.  Rick announces he’s heading to his container.  Rina follows Nika to the bridge and Nika sees a vessel landing in the back yard of Fairweather Flyers.  It’s a FireflyShe looks at Rina and they go aft to start rounding everybody up.
Nika starts to laugh.

We prep to get our guests off-ship with apologies and a good portion of dinner.  Christian tells the girls good-bye, impressing firmly on them that they no longer know us, and they’re nothing special to us—to ward against being taken hostage, understand? At which point, Nika tells everyone not to have a paranoid fit.  She’s going to take a look.
'''Nika:''' (to Rick) I like the way you think.

Rina: Nika, where do you want me?  Bridge, engineering, or on your back?  (sees Arden’s expression) ''' ''Don’t'' ''' go there.<br>
The familiar sound of a shotgun being cocked carries across the barroom floorSheriff Messner’s had enoughHe’s got his shotgun up and out and cocked, and he’s got his game face on.
Nika: Ar-''den''(to Rina) Stick with me.<br>
Rina: All right.

The Sheriff escorts Summer and the two girls back to the bar in town.  He’s got a gun, he can protect them if it comes to a fight.  Rina and Nika follow them below decks to the airlock and see them off before turning for the arms locker.  Rina still has her gun from walking in town, so she waits til Nika retrieves her weapon.
'''Messner:''' Bar’s closed!

Arden goes to watch over everything from the bridge.  Rick goes to check his alligators.  Christian decides to don his mesh and a long coat, just in case the lead starts flying.  However, he refuses to give in to paranoia to the point of getting his rifle.  Finished, he joins Arden on the bridge. Nika watches the dinner party return to town on foot from her vantage point at the airlock door.  She sits down on the bottom step of the boarding stairs and makes like she’s just taking the air.  Rina stands out of sight behind her in the airlock, and together they both wait to see what happens at the other ship, several yards over.  On the bridge, Christian gets ready to spin up our engines.
Nika jumps.

'''Nika:''' Holy shit!<br>
Arden and Nika both see five people walk off the Firefly’s cargo ramp. Four of them take off for town and the fifth goes back inside. The four on foot will have to pass our ship to get where they’re going and Nika’s in the perfect position to get a good look at them as they come closer.
'''Christian:''' Well, that’s one way to end a bar fight.<br>
'''Messner:''' Everybody outa the bar. Go home. Last one out is gonna get a backside fulla buckshot.<br>
'''Arden:''' But that means someone’s gonna get it.<br>
'''Messner:''' That’s right.<br>
'''Rina:''' You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here.<br>

It’s now full dark, but some details are still discernableThey’re four menDusters and hatsOne is carrying a rifleFreighter cowboys.
Christian turns to Messner and asks how much is owed for the drinksMessner waves it, telling him to just leaveChristian leaves three credits anyway and goes to Summer on the verandah, and asks if she’s like an escort outRina’s off the porch and already around the corner of the building, positioned ready to shoot any of the bad guys as they exit the buildingNika turns to the cowboys at the table.

Arden alerts Rick and Mike that getting their weapons might be a good idea, because there might be trouble.  Nika warns them that they shouldn’t overreact—on the Rim everyone carries a rifle or a gunLet’s not get paranoid.  Rick retrieves his rifle anyway and loads it with tranquilizer rounds.  He goes back to his container to man one of the two loading hatches overlooking the path the cowboys will take, and Arden joins Christian on the bridge.
'''Nika:''' Well, damn, and you didn’t even buy me a drinkAfter you.

The four cowboys pass under the bridge and pass the airlock stairs.  The one with the rifle tips the brim of his hat with the rifle barrel and nods at Nika as he draws nearer.
She waves them to the door with a flourish.  The cowboys looks confused.  The dealer looks confused and then nods.

Rifle Cowboy: Ma’am.<br>
'''Dealer:''' Okay, this’ll work.  This’ll work.<br>
Nika: Howdy.  Evenin’, gentlemen.  Nice night.<br>
'''Arden:''' What’ll work?<br>
Rifle Cowboy: I s’pose.  We’re headed to the bar, if you want to join us.<br>
'''Dealer:''' I’m gonna go talk to the Sheriff and you guys, why don’t you head back to your ship.
Nika: Well, that’s a mighty nice invitation.  Unfortunately, there’s some stuff I gotta do tonight, thanks.<br>
Rifle Cowboy: It looks like you’re holdin’ up the ship.<br>
Nika: (shrugs) Eh, for the next five minutes or so, anyway. Just takin’ a break.<br>
Rifle Cowboy: Mm-hm.  Okay.

And he keeps on walkin’.  He and the others glance at the ship as they pass, and Rina eyes their backs from her position in the airlock, already thinking that the men are comparing her ship unfavorably to theirs.  Screw them.  We’ll be gone before they get back.  No shots are fired, no further words exchanged.  They walk off into the night with nothing untoward happening.
Meaning he isn’t gunning for us anymore.

When they’re far enough out, Nika mounts the stairs to join Rina in the airlock.
'''Dealer:''' Well now, Sheriff, we weren’t gonna mess up anything for you.<br>
'''Messner:''' Get your butt outa here.

Nika: So…do you wanna hit the bar?  Or do you wanna take off? <br>
The Dealer goes.
Rina: (grimly) They’re going to the bar. Aren’t the girls at the bar?  What if they’re after the girls?

Christian hails them over the comm.
Nika waves the cowboys through the door again. They head out cautiously and Nika is right at their heels to keep an eye on them.  No telling if they’ll try to pull a fast one and ambush us on the way out.  Rina keeps her gun trained on them but refrains from shooting.  Inside the bar, Muleskinner is wheeled out by the singer and the pianist follows behind.  Messner motions the girls to hang back, let him deal with this.  Then the Sheriff looks at us.

Christian: I can’t see any more. I don’t hear any shots.  Hey, are you there and alive?<br>
'''Messner:''' You, too. Listen, I don’t wanna repay your hospitality with the opposite, but I’d like you to leave too, pleaseSomethin’s not right here.
Nika: (hitting the comm button) Nope.<br>
Rina: We’re dead.<br>
Christian: (to Arden) Guess what? We just got two more shares of the ship.<br>
Arden: Cool.

But considering no one else can fix anything if it breaks down and Christian is nowhere as competent a pilot, they decide to call the women back.  In the airlock, Nika makes up her mind.
Skeddadle.

Nika: (to Rina) Let’s go over to the bar and say goodbye to the girls. <br>
We all get out of there, relieved to have avoided a messy barfightThe Sheriff has demonstrated he’ll keep an eye on the girls and for a protector, they can’t do much better than the lawman of these parts. Nika orders Rick to stick with Rina and escort our friends back. Meaning the cowboys. Mike puts a hand on Nika’s shoulder, saying:
Rina: There you go.<br>
Nika: (over the comm) Guys? We’re gonna go over to the bar very briefly and say goodbye to the girls for the last time.<br>
Arden: Whyyyy?<br>
Nika: And then we’re gonna jet off.<br>
Arden: And you want to tempt the Devil one more time in order to do this?<br>
Nika: I just wanna make sure that they’re okay.<br>
Christian: They could just be here to pick up crops.<br>
Nika: They could just be here to pick up anything.<br>
Arden: Then why even go? <br>
Rick: (cutting in over the comm) You might not want them to know that you know the girls.<br>
Nika: Good point.<br>
Christian: You can just go there and say goodbye to the Sheriff, then.<br>
Arden: Why not just get back on the ship ''and let’s go?''<br>
Nika: All right.  I’m fine with that if you people are.

Rick bows out of the vote, saying he’s just a passengerRina, however, is not too sanguine about leaving.
'''Mike:''' There’s more to this than meets the eye.<br>
'''Nika:''' Yeah, I’m pretty well aware of that.<br>
'''Mike:''' It’s okay to keep your eye on them but they’re not the sort to—.<br>
'''Nika:''' I knowMy primary focus is to get back to the ship.  And that’s it.<br>
'''Mike:''' May be.

Arden: Why is she making impatient noises? <br>
Summer and the girls see us out on the porch.  Christian turns to Summer and offers to escort her home. She demurs, saying she can take care of herself.  And leaves. Christian turns to the two girls next, kisses them both on the cheek and wishes them well in their new life.
Nika: Because she’s Rina.<br>
Arden: Rina, is there something you want to interject?<br>
Christian:  ''I’m'' going to the bar.<br>
Nika: That means ''I’m'' going to the bar.

And that pretty much settles it.  We’re ''all'' going to the barChristian and Arden grab their weapons from the locker.
'''Arden:''' Christian''Hurry.''

Rina: (to Nika) Of course, the minute you get there, they’re gonna think you changed your mind.
Down the street, the Dealer has caught up with the four cowboys and we just make out his words as he claps one on the arm and gestures at them to follow.

Meaning the cowboys.
'''Dealer:''' Come with me, guys.  Change of plans.

Nika: I’ll just go in and tell the Sheriff thanks for the hospitality but we’re takin’ off.
He leads them in a direction other than the ship.  Arden starts making impatient noises.  Back to the ship, people, back to the ship.

Arden tells us to wait a minute so he can get his bag.  Nika thanks him for the vote of confidence, adding that his bag wouldn’t look suspicious at all, nossir.  Arden retorts he’s staying outside to watch our backs and our escape route.  Everything starts happening a bit too fast and Nika calls a time out.
'''Nika:''' Check the ship before we even lift off.
'''Rina:''' Oh, hell yes.

Nika: Oh for God’s sake, why the hell aren’t we just taking off?<br>
There could be bombs, booby-trapsAnything, reallyWe get back to our ship and we see that our airlock stairs down.
Arden: ''Exactly!''<br>
Rina: (easily) Because I’m a paranoid bitch.<br>
Nika: Do you think it has more to do with the fact that all of us are ingrained with the idea that if the Universe sticks it in front of us, we should go with it?<br>
Arden: The only reason I’m not doing it, is Christian’s not doing it.  And Christian’s not doing it because he cares about people.
Christian: It comes down to on the off chance they’re after the girls, the Sheriff will probably try to protect themHe will be outnumbered, they will shoot him—and very possibly Summer, who is there, tooIt’ll take us five minutes to check and be sure that’s not the case.<br>
Nika: (to Heaven) And I thought ''Rina'' was paranoid....<br>
Rina: I’m rubbin’ off on everybody.  It’s just another service I offer.<br>
Rick: You all are just freakin’ me out, and I’m ready for whatever.<br>
Christian: It’s not paranoia ''if everyone is out to get us.''

We all take a step back from the edge and breatheThen:
''' ''Shit.'' '''

Christian: I realize I’m being a mother hen, but—<br>
It sucks to be right.
Nika: All right, fine.  That’s fine, I’ll go with you.  I just want you to realize the second you walk in there, the girls are going to ID you as someone they know.<br>
Christian: I don’t think it’s going to be a big secret that we brought them here.<br>
Rina: We’re just there to give them a last-minute goodbye.<br>
Arden: I’ll get my bag.

Sheriff Messner is on duty behind the bar and he’s looking a bit like: What’s going to happen? What do I wanna let happen? In short, nervous.

Arden: (whispering on the comms) Just say goodbye and let’s get out of here.

Nika goes straight to the bar to talk to the Sheriff. Rina follows and Mike takes up an unobtrusive position at the bar.

Nika: I just wanted to thank you for your hospitality. We’re gonna go and head out tonight.
Messner: You mind stickin’ around for a little bit. These…people mean some trouble. I could use the extra hand…

He makes a subtle gesture at the four cowboys at the table in the corner.

Nika: Not a problem Sheriff. (into her comm’s pick-up) Didja hear that?

Since Rina had her hand comm on and clipped to her coveralls, and was next to Nika throughout the entire conversation with the Sheriff, everyone heard it. We get a chorus of double-clicks from everybody on our team. Nika looks at Rina and then at the door. Grokking it, Rina goes outside. She comms Arden.

Rina: (quietly) Arden, there’s trouble. The Sheriff’s asked us to stay. Nika’s said yes. Tell Rick on the ship. Arden: I’ll be going in in a few minutes, but I’m not going to sit with you all. Rina: Fine.

Rina checks her gun under her coveralls and settles in to guard the door and wait. She props up the front rail on the porch, wishing she smoked, since a cigarette would make a perfect excuse for her to linger outside.

Back at the ship, Rick opens up the door on the upper decks cargo container best able to give him a view of the approach from town and the other ship. He sits and he wonders just what the hell sorta gang he’s fallen in with. He asks his two pigmy alligators, Evil Tick and Smudge, what they think of this oddball crew. They don’t answer, being more concerned with crawling around in the container.

Rick: Yeah. I think they’re all crazy, too.

Rick gets the call from Arden and makes up his mind: he closes up the cargo doors, takes his rifle and leaves the ship. It’s pitch black out there, since there aren’t much in the way of streetlights, and he comms Arden that he’s on his way in.

Arden: Do you want me to wait for you?
Rick: No, I’m gonna make it look like I don’t know you.

Singer: Something…(thinks better of it) Ah…well, it’s just good to see people. It’s good to see people in town again. It’s been a long time since we’ve had two ships! We’ll see what happens. Maybe things are lookin’ up for this little city.

At the bar, Nika takes a seat and discreetly waves the bartender over.

Nika: Gimme a beer and tell me what you know about those guys…?
Messner: (handing her the beer) Just a hunch.
Nika: Great.

Inside, everyone seems to be getting’ along just fine. Outside, Rick arrives and finds Rina on the porch being twitchy.

Rick: But it’s a pretty nice place. I’m surprised that so many people left, what with all the interesting plants. Have you seen the kinds of orchids they’re growing?

The cowboys think his comment on the interesting plants is mighty funny. It is, actually, considering the main cash crop here is cannabis. They ask Rick if he’s from the other ship. Yeah, Rick arranged for some transport. He’s in the business of growing plants of the medical and ornate variety, and he’s looking to sell some plants. The cowboy opines that this is a strange place to choose, saying that Jibril or Micah would be better venues since they are bigger cities.

Cowboy: So who all’s the captain of that ship? (extends hand) I’m Bean, by the way.
Rick: (shaking hands) I’m Rick.
Bean: You look kinda familiar.
Rick: You know, I get that a lot. It’s pretty funny. I have a common face, I guess.
Bean: Yeah. Maybe that’s it.

So we wait.

A little while later we hear Rina murmur over the comms:

Rina: Our potdealer is back.

Dealer: Christian Edge, right?
Christian: (doesn’t miss a beat) That would be me.
Dealer: I never forget a face. Not a face such as yours. It’s quite a site in a town like this.
Christian: (smiles) You flatter me.
Dealer: Well, when I can get away with it. Can you give up your keyboard for a minute?
Christian:' Absolutely.

Christian stands up and shoulders his rifle, thanks the singer and the pianist, and goes with the dealer to the balcony. Summer is on the balcony and sitting in the lotus position. Christian nods at her and continues on. He and the dealer lean on the rail and look out over the crater.

Dealer: Confucius says every obstacle is also an opportunity.
Christian: Indeed, he does.
Dealer: I fiund myself in the somewhat embarrassing situation of having hired a bunch of goons to beat your crew up. However, I am perfectly happy to change that deal—
Christian: If we give you a better offer.
Dealer: —if you give me a better offer than the person who contacted me.
Christian: To just beat us up?
Dealer:' That’s all he wanted.
Christian: There’s a whole lot of questions I have, but my immediate concern is not being physically harmed.
Dealer: Yeah, I’m with ya.
Christian: I’m just curious as to how you got them here so quickly.
Dealer: Oh, these boys? They’re just from Jibril.
Christian: So they’re relatively local. Well, how much are we talking about?
Dealer: Uh, twelve hundred?
Christian: How long do we have to decide on your offer?
Dealer: Uh, what time is it?

It’s 20:30 hours, or 8:30 PM.

Christian: It’s not that far from nine.
Dealer: Well, don’t take too long.
Christian: I’ll tell you what. Give me ten minutes to speak to the captain.
Dealer: You have a captain.
Christian: Yes. I am in charge of negotiations but the final decisions go to the captain.
Dealer: Who is the guy?
Christian: You see the lovely lady at the bar? That’s her.
Dealer: All right.

Or maybe the dealer is trying to extort money from us. Nika agrees it’s a strong possibility. Also, Christian adds if we leave now, it all goes down. So what do we do?

You know, we should’ve just taken off when we had the chance.

Rina: (over the comm) You think we should shoot them?

Her comment catches Arden off-guard and he slams his beer mug down, sputtering.

Christian: But we had to be sure.
Nika: And we could’a just taken off, Christian. Lemme finish my beer before we start the brawl, please.
Christian: Sure. But on the other hand, we know a lot more now than we knew before. Chances are we’ll know a lot more. If we survive this.

Can’t argue that.

Rina: (over the comm) I’ve got a full clip. I’ve got ten shots.
Nika: (into her beer) Shoot to maim, please.

Christian turns around and orders a drink from Messner, saying:

Christian: Yeah….there’s going to be trouble.

Nika leans past Christian to address Rick.

Nika: You ready for a bar brawl?
Rick: Yeah, I should be ready for a fight.

Arden quietly tells Muleskinner that he might want to get out of here. As Nika and Rick make their plans as to who to take down first, Christian suggests the element of surprise. Why not have our mechanic come in with her gun drawn and tell them to put down their weapons?

Rina: (over the comms) Excuse me?
Nika: You just wanna jump ’em?
Christian: I just want to cover them.
Nika: Let’s just jump ’em. We may as well get it over with. I don’t wanna pay that yutz 500 credits.
Rick: I can punch the big one in the face….
Christian: I just think that if she has a gun on them before they can draw their guns, they’re less likely to draw their guns.
Nika: Nobody should bring a gun to a fist fight. That just ain’t sportin’.
Christian: So you just want to jump them? Because if you do, my ability to take them on is about as good as my ability to…yeah. I’m perfectly willing to bring a gun to a fist fight because that’s what they’re doing.
Rina: Oh, hell yeah.
Nika: (under her breath) Oh, frakkin’ hell…
Christian: But on the other hand there’s the chance one of the innocents will be caught in the crossfire and shot.
Rina: Then clear them out.
Rick: You guys are crazy.
Nika: You think?
Rick: Maybe we could lure them to the balcony and knick them over the edge.
Rina: I like that plan.

Nika starts to laugh.

Nika: (to Rick) I like the way you think.

The familiar sound of a shotgun being cocked carries across the barroom floor. Sheriff Messner’s had enough. He’s got his shotgun up and out and cocked, and he’s got his game face on.

Messner: Bar’s closed!

Nika jumps.

Nika: Holy shit!
Christian: Well, that’s one way to end a bar fight.
Messner: Everybody outa the bar. Go home. Last one out is gonna get a backside fulla buckshot.
Arden: But that means someone’s gonna get it.
Messner: That’s right.
Rina: You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here.

Christian turns to Messner and asks how much is owed for the drinks. Messner waves it, telling him to just leave. Christian leaves three credits anyway and goes to Summer on the verandah, and asks if she’s like an escort out. Rina’s off the porch and already around the corner of the building, positioned ready to shoot any of the bad guys as they exit the building. Nika turns to the cowboys at the table.

Nika: Well, damn, and you didn’t even buy me a drink. After you.

She waves them to the door with a flourish. The cowboys looks confused. The dealer looks confused and then nods.

Dealer: Okay, this’ll work. This’ll work.
Arden: What’ll work?
Dealer: I’m gonna go talk to the Sheriff and you guys, why don’t you head back to your ship.

Meaning he isn’t gunning for us anymore.

Dealer: Well now, Sheriff, we weren’t gonna mess up anything for you.
Messner: Get your butt outa here.

The Dealer goes.

Messner: You, too. Listen, I don’t wanna repay your hospitality with the opposite, but I’d like you to leave too, please. Somethin’s not right here.

Skeddadle.

We all get out of there, relieved to have avoided a messy barfight. The Sheriff has demonstrated he’ll keep an eye on the girls and for a protector, they can’t do much better than the lawman of these parts. Nika orders Rick to stick with Rina and escort our friends back. Meaning the cowboys. Mike puts a hand on Nika’s shoulder, saying:

Mike: There’s more to this than meets the eye.
Nika: Yeah, I’m pretty well aware of that.
Mike: It’s okay to keep your eye on them but they’re not the sort to—.
Nika: I know. My primary focus is to get back to the ship. And that’s it.
Mike: May be.

Summer and the girls see us out on the porch. Christian turns to Summer and offers to escort her home. She demurs, saying she can take care of herself. And leaves. Christian turns to the two girls next, kisses them both on the cheek and wishes them well in their new life.

Arden: Christian. Hurry.

Down the street, the Dealer has caught up with the four cowboys and we just make out his words as he claps one on the arm and gestures at them to follow.

Dealer: Come with me, guys. Change of plans.

He leads them in a direction other than the ship. Arden starts making impatient noises. Back to the ship, people, back to the ship.

Nika: Check the ship before we even lift off. Rina: Oh, hell yes.

There could be bombs, booby-traps. Anything, really. We get back to our ship and we see that our airlock stairs down.

Shit.

It sucks to be right.
