Heylel the scholar was born in a small Southern town built around a jade vein owned by House Peleps. The Great House built a small school of engineering and thaumaturgy to train local children for mining operations. Heylel was considered to be hands-down the best of the bunch, with a quick mind and an eager willingness to learn and to better himself. Unfortunately, he was clever enough to arouse the jealousy of a Dynast's younger Terrestrial son. With the use of Charms he was able to keep up and make up for his lack of scholastic talent, but he was struck by a sense of being barely adequate that burned at him.

One night, the young Dynast's hired thugs dragged Heylel out of his dormitory window and locked him in a cell in one of the mines, where his rival began using him as a test subject for an experimental alchemical compound intended for slaves and other manual laborers, which he called "thickened bone dust." After two months of being fed thickened bone dust and red meat (and little else), the reed-thin scholar exploded outwards into a mountain of hard muscle and bone. This transformation had taken its toll, however, and his brilliant mind was almost completely burned out, and the promising student was now a hulk of a man unable even to write his own name.

Too ashamed to return to his family, Heylel was put to work in the mines, where his enormous body would be of use. His Dragon-Blooded rival cackled and prepared to lace the village's water supply with his thickened bone dust, but it was then that the demons came. The blood ape offered the chance to become a Green Sun Prince, to have power and to have revenge, but most important, he offered Heylel the chance to be someone again. Heylel accepted his offer, and the Peleps compound collapsed overnight in a fury of violence. The Dynast's alchemical notes were never recovered.

Heylel's relationship with the Yozis is complicated, like that of all Green Sun Princes. Malfeas considers his giant Prince to be far improved over his old self, but has some sympathy for a man who feels himself mutilated by his enemies. Heylel is both attracted and repulsed by the brutality of the Demon City, but has to agree that Creation's current management is lacking. Malfeas considers the Ruined Scholar to be a completely loyal and obedient servant. Heylel, on the other hand, has already learned a painful lesson in the value of affecting servility.

Heylel is just a few inches short of seven feet tall; the Chrysalis Grotesque smoothed out the lumps and asymmetries induced by his chemically-enhanced growth and left him relatively handsome, in a brutish sort of way. His hair is a smouldering deep red and his skin a dark Southern tan. He wears green-tinted orichalcum armor and plated smashfists into battle, which he does with great relish when he deems it necessary. His greatest desire is to protect people like his old self- the intelligent and knowing ones who don't have the power to stand up for themselves.

Bullies need to be smashed. Exactly who Heylel needs to be smashing at the end of the day is yet to be determined.
