THE ORIGIN OF ANGRA MAINYU

In the beginning, there was no time or space, no meaning or purpose … and this was after Creation was pretty well finished. The Creator looked at the length of The World Tree, from the tip of perfection crowned with mysterious and deadly stars to the very depths of hell cloaked in a fiery blanket of corruption. But nothing moved; nothing felt. The angels lay sleeping, the worlds lay formed but motionless; the whole of the Tree awaited its birthing pain.

Cneph, greatest of all spirits, then became pregnant with possibility. He swelled and then birthed the twin Gods Ormazd and Angra Mainyu. Ormazd was born of light and Cneph's hopes for a long and glorious Creation, while Angra Mainyu was concieved and suckled on Cneph's doubt such a perfect vision would ever be complete. These two spirits became the first lords of the Spirit World and spawned all later Divine Ymera; they were Yin and Yang, Good and Evil, the Beginning and the End. Cneph had promised the Earth to the first of the True Gods to be born, and upon hearing this promise Angra Mainyu exploded out of Cneph’s wound as a roiling mass of crawling insects. They tore at the fabric of reality, and the damage they did was called Time, ever drawing Creation to its inevitable end.

Angra Mainyu howled for his birthright, and longed to plague Earth with darkness and pestilence. Cneph felt great sadness for the poor world, and so said that the Old God would rule Earth for only 9000 years and that after that Ormazd would have the crown. Mainyu agreed. His rule was a horrible time of eternal night and cavorting insect-demons. But this time passed, and with the rise of Ormazd came the War in Heaven and the rising of the New Gods. Lord Entropy, the spawn of Mainyu, became leader of the Council of Four, an outcome favourable enough to the Spirit King of Evil that he left it at that.

Since that time, Angra Mainyu has come to Earth rarely. His cult, the Zurvanite Heresy, or Dei Arimanio is still widespread throughout the world, but hidden and small. The secrets to call on their dark master's power is held only by the most initiated dark Zoroastrian mystics. Angra Mainyu spends most of his time in the Spirit World, slowly consuming the potential energy and sliding everything from cause to effect. His control over the Spirit Kingdoms are weak, but he has had since the dawn of time to terrorize them. His darkness is ancient and legend, and his name is whispered in fear on all worlds of the Tree. Here he takes the form of a tidal wave of bubbling Evil and electric Time, preceded by his chorus of insectile children.

But it was the return of Ormazd to Earth that inspired Angra Mainyu to come back to that little world. Ormazd is Good, Space and Hominids, and his enChancelment upon the Earth inspired a New Renaissance. Technology exploded and mankind took to the stars. Space technology lead to knowledge of other worlds, magic, and even the barest beginnings of Miraculous understanding. When the first Time Machines were built though, in the year 2511, that was what alerted the Bug Emperor to make himself known again. The first thing he did upon his return was consume the last 500 years of progress, resetting the clock to 2011.

Let the games begin anew, brother, the Source of All Evil snickered.

Continued Musing on The Roiling Monstrosity

In the Spirit World, things are boiled down to their most metaphoric level. Nothing has shape or form, only meaning and sentience. The True Gods roll on top of eachother, warring, mating, struggling with eachother and relenting to the advances of others. It is hard to say exactly where one Divinity ends and another begins.

Ormazd and Angra Mainyu are brothers, twins, antitheses, and the cardinal points of the moral spectrum. Together, the Twins allow all Creation to exist through the interplay of Space and Time, Evil and Good. That Hominids and Insects struggle on a hundred worlds against eachother throughout the Tree only mirrors their (literally) eternal struggle.

In many ways they are so opposite they are practically the same. They are two sides of the same coin, the furthest points of light and darkness in Creation. Some legends say they were birthed together in the womb of Cneph, born of his hope and doubt for all life in Creation. Others say they coalesced in the Spirit World at opposite ends of possibility, and their polar attraction to each other spawned all the other Divine Ymera who make up the Spirit World.

Ormazd is wise and omnipresent, existing in every point in the universe. Angra Mainyu is simple-minded and exists simultaneously in all moments in time. Every act of kindness, heroism or justice is a manifestation of Ormazd's glory. Every act of cruelty, villainy or wrongdoing is an emanation of Angra Mainyu's foulness. Ormazd fathered humanity and all creatures like it throughout the World Tree. Angra Mainyu infests every world in the form of legions of crawling insects. We move from one place to another through Ormazd, his nature allowing us free passage through his body. We are dragged against our will constantly towards our end by Angra Mainyu's hate.

In his bountiful heart, Ormazd dreams of one day uniting all worlds and all creatures as if they were neighbours, ushering in an age of perfect harmony. In his black, poisonous core, Angra Mainyu hopes only for the end of the universe. He just toys with reality as a distraction until the big day. Neither will ever achieve their dream if the other has their say. And so, the history of the world continues ...

A LEGEND

On Earth, the first man was named Adam. But he was only the first man on Earth, and Earth is a young world. The first man, the very first, was born on a world called Ziran and his name was Bob.

Bob was born into the Garden of Ji, which was built on top of the supermall used by the previous dominant species on Ziran that had been wiped out to make way for this Bob guy. He had everything he needed provided to him as long as he kept his trust Crowbar with him, for God had left him many shops and food courts to raid. He dwelled within the furniture stores and entertained himself with the toys and electronics kiosks.

His life was good, and he needed not.

But the God of Space came down in his spaceship to the Garden of Ji and with klaxons and flashing strobe lights he commanded the attention of Bob. Bob had just eaten, and the sight of God nearly startled him to choking, but God knew the Heimlich Maneuver and the First Human was saved.

"Oh thank you, my Lord" Bob said, looking at the chicken bone that had almost claimed his life.

"Don't you mind it" said the Space God, stroking his mighty beard. "I just came to tell you I made this world for you and have supplied you here with everything you need."

"Except a wife" interrupted Bob, who had been watching some of the movies in the video rental store. He had seen some of the dirty videos behind the counter too, and knew all sorts of Ziranian tricks to try on her.

God shrugged and yanked a mate for the man out of his third eye, forever blinding him to the true nature of the universe, but allowing him to have the blessing of females in his life and society. Then, just to mess with him, God told Bob that she belonged to him, and then snickered at the results, which ended with Bob dunked in the mall entrance fountain.

"Now Bob," God commanded, hitting the klaxons again for good effect, "I have given you everything you need. But know this ... do not eat of the food court in the bottom floor in the mall. The food there has gone bad, and the things surviving things there won't like you."

Well, Bob got the message, but his wife was a little more leary of any god in a spaceship, and so she went down to the first floor to see for herself. Of all the creatures in the mall, Cockroach was the most hungry and sneaky. He wanted to eat Bob's wife ...
