GALLERY OF GUEST STARS

Bradley Sims

Bradley Sims is our 2nd class passenger, needing a ride to Persephone but not in too much of a hurry to get there. He also cannnot pay for the full fare and is willing to work to earn the remainder of his fare.

James Brion

If you need parts and aren't too picky as to where they're from, James Brion is your man. He's a mite expensive but his parts are worth it.

Shere Macadam

She's Bearclaw's apothecary. She has an amazing set of adjustable lenses and spends her days harvesting minerals and herbs for her stores. She's also the person to go to if you need some greenleaf.

DIALOGUE TO REWIND FOR

Part 1
Kiera: I turn up in this part of town to buy something and you’re gonna beat me senseless with a wrench. This is really sucky for business.
Mechanic: If you just give me the money, maybe you’ll get something nice in return.

Rina: Well, you know there are plenty of idiots out there.
Kiera: Hmm. Darn, now I was lookin’ for an honest one. Damn.

Brion: Where’s your ship fly?
Kiera: Everywhere.
Brion: Everywhere?
Kiera: Everywhere. (thinks) So far, everywhere.

Kiera: You said yourself, we took the bus. We’re poor. We got hope and rebellion. That’s all we got.

Rina: How’s the engine run?
Driver: It’s all right.
Rina: (grins) Could run better.

Nika: What the bloody hell? Kiera!

Nika: Containers of what? Nobody ever asked.
Kiera: Why would I ask?
Arden: (joining in) Containers of what?
Kiera: Let me repeat again—why would I ask?
Arden: Why wouldn’t you ask?
Kiera: Okay, do you not understand how I work?

Rina: (pushing the package) Because it would make us look suspicious and untrustworthy if we asked.
Arden: Oh, as opposed to looking stupid and unprepared if we don’t ask?
Joshua: I would like to repeat that we really are suspicious.

Nika: (disgusted) God. I’m going to gouge out my eyes, here, Kiera.
Rina: (at the stairs) Please don’t. They cost too much.

Part 2
Joshua: I’m not happy about machine guns.
Kiera: Aw.
Joshua: I’m not going to say anything.
Kiera: Uh huh.
Joshua: I understand why we have it but—
Kiera: But you wanted the pacifist ship with a little peace sign on it.
Joshua: No.
Kiera: Uh huh.
Joshua: No. Not really.
Kiera: Yeah, you did.
Joshua: No.
Nika: All right, c’mon. Stop.
Joshua: (to Nika) Well, it’s your ship. (off her look) What? It is your ship.
Kiera: Mom! He’s poking me.

Kiera: Oh look. Junk. Just like you said.
Nika: (to Arden) Are you happy now?
Arden: I wasn’t unhappy before.
Kiera: Really?

Joshua: No worries. We’ve the best pilot this side of the Verse.
Arden: What side is that?
Nika: Whatever side of the Verse you happen to be on.

Rina: Do you want me to dig a little further into the cargo? That parting comment “It’s going to be valuable in the next couple of months”—what does he mean by that? Do we want to know? Cuz, you know, I’m thinking ...”
Joshua: (to Nika) Should I talk to her?
Nika: No.
Rina: Thank you.
Joshua: Really?
Nika: (to Rina) However—however—there will be no trace when you’re done. (to Joshua) Rina has a direct order that there is to be no trace that she’s been in the cargo. And by the way, Rina. When I mean no trace, I mean no trace for somebody like you. So if you can’t get into it in such a fashion, don’t open it.
Rina: Of course.

Nika: You know I did this just to keep her busy for the entire two weeks. It’s keeping her out of trouble.
Joshua: You do realize this is our first trip we haven’t been haunted by ghosts. I was planning on keeping her busy.
Nika: (eyeroll) Well, then go distract her! Nobody’s stopping you.
Joshua: But now she’s all caught up in the—
Nika: (to her charts) I’m sure there is some way you can distract her. If you’re not good enough to do it, then you have more problems coming up in your future marriage than you might think.

Part 3
Joshua: Your call, Captain.
Nika: Yeah, I’ll lie.
Joshua: How far are you lying?

Joshua: Attention all crew and passengers. We will be approaching very close to the sun. If you do not want sunburn, please do not stand anywhere near the windows or in fact anywhere outside of a lead container.
Arden: (over comms) What? We’re flying near the sun?
Joshua: If we don’t fly right, we’ll be flying through the sun. That’ll be the fun part.

Sims: I just got turned around. Sorry, I was just trying to—
Joshua: (not buying it) Let’s step back for a second and give you a second chance to tell me what you were doing. You weren’t just turned around. I’ll give you a clear one, free of charge. You can tell me what you were doing. (a beat) Because if it isn’t the right answer this time, you’re going to be off on Triumph and out in the middle of nowhere. Without a ride to Persephone or for that matter, civilization. So start with what you were doing.

Joshua: We’ve had a few bad experiences with armed passengers before so you can understand why we generally don’t arm the passengers when there might be a chance that something might happen at some point. Maybe. Are you really that worried? Or did you have something else in mind?
Sims: Everyone on my last ship was killed.
Joshua: (firmly) What happened?

Joshua: Fair enough. Shake on it?
Sims: Does a handshake mean a lot to you?
Joshua: (firm) It does to me. I know it doesn’t to a lot of people, but it does to me.

Bartender: You came on a shuttle. That’s a bit unusual.
Nika: What would be the usual?
Bartender: Horse.

Bartender: (pointedly) No one has seen anyone. You can’t see anything if you tried with that crazy contraption on your head.
Woman: (unfazed) They help me see better.
Joshua: What are they? I’ve got to report back to my wife about this one. If somebody has a crazy contraption and I haven’t figured out what it was and I told her about it, I’m gonna get a whuppin’.

Joshua: (wow!) An apothecary? Fan-tastic.
Nika: What does that mean?
Joshua: I don’t know but it’s fantastic.

Joshua: It’s Baba Yaga! I’ve always wanted to meet Baba Yaga.

Macadam: Be careful back there. Some of this stuff can be potent.
Kiera: Ohh... batwings. Cool.

Macadam: Well ... he got taken. Lights in the sky.
Kiera: OOH! Aliens. Awesome.
Joshua: Really?

Macadam: Whaddya think’a them? The Browncoats? Awful ’dacious. Right here in Alliance territory.
Joshua: Well, yeah. I like audacious.
Macadam: You do?
Joshua: (quietly) Yeah.
Kiera: Ooooh, sassafrass!

Kiera: Would you know us if we bought something? Or would you just know us? (nods to Joshua) Well, you can know him all you want.
Macadam: (gently) No, it’s not about that, sweetie. It’s about where do you stand.

NUTS AND BOLTS

We've a long repairs and remodel list to keep us occupied during our 6-week downtime on Beaumonde.

  • Dust contamination of our systems (Ep:517)
  • Disguise entrances to our missile bays with fake shelving and surfaces
  • Conversion of 2nd class cabins to 1st class
  • Installation of en suite bathrooms in 1st class cabins
  • Installation of retractable light machine gun under bridge, including hatch on hull, ammo feed and storage system
  • Conversion of several closets and lockers into secure weapons lockers: conference room closet, closet under cargo bay stairs, rearmost starboard storage locker in engineering corridor.
  • Installation of locked stash boxes for pistols: engineering, cargo bay airlock
  • Concealed emergency kits with a pistol, extra clip and break-out tools: pending

We've also upgraded and added to the equipment in the ship's machine shop, allowing Rina and Beglan more options for repairs and fabrication of parts.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

Part 3

  1. When Sims described how he’d stowed aboard the ship belonging to the men who murdered everyone on Lancaster, why did those same men drop him off alive at Rock Haven? Why let a witness to murder walk? Sims could turn them over to the authorities the second he walked off their ship. Why didn’t Joshua call him on it?

Part 4

  1. What is Joshua’s interest in pharmaceuticals, especially now that he’s been clean of drugs for six months? Why did he want the LSD? What was on the shopping list he slipped to Kiera? And when is he going to tell Rina about it?
