Runic magic?

That's fine as a special effect, I guess. The process is usually chanting/incantation and gestures. The gestures can be of runes. Then the investing of magical power into the spell by tapping a ley line and directing the magic.

For clerics it would be prayers, runic gestures and the god(s) granting the power.

Runes are most applicable for alchemists, which are minor mages that must invest magical power into an item or potion (rather than better mages that can use spells immediately). Runes are drawn while tranferring magical energy into the item via the rune.
