He's a young German doctor who has traveled the world to look after people/learn about medicine/be a generally good, well rounded person. But one night he was treating a woman with severe traumatic injuries and something spooked him (he saw something he shouldn't have, she said something, he caught almost proof of the horrors that dwell beneath the surface) and he flipped. Decided that as long as people were being hurt by things he didn't understand, he was going to put his skills to good use.
