Encumbrance
It is critical to track encumbrance, so as to know precise movement of characters and to make any necessary adjustment to spell casting rolls. Every item that can be carried and used in one hand is a Thing. An item that requires two hands is two Things. Very small items are not individually tracked. Instead, a group of six such items counts as one Thing. Add up all the Things a character is carrying to determine the Encumbrance level of the character.
Encumbrance can be used as a negative modifier to skill rolls such as swimming, climbing, or similar. It should not be used as a modifier for combat rolls in most cases.
Things Carried | Encumbrance Level | Adjustment | Movement Rate |
---|---|---|---|
Unencumbered | 0 | 12" | |
Light Encumbrance | 1 | 9" | |
Encumbered | 2 | 6" | |
Over Encumbered | 3 | 3" |
Strength determines Encumbrance. Characters with normal Strength may carry 3 items and be Unencumbered, 6 items and be Lightly Encumbered, 12 items and be Encumbered, and 24 items and be Over Encumbered. Characters with an advantage in Strength increase those limits to 4, 9, 18, and 36 respectively. Characters with a disadvantage in Strength decrease those to 1, 3, 6, and 12 respectively.
