Stats[edit]
Cardassian science officer. She comes from a family with a long military history but after the disastrous Dominion War and understanding what the occupation truly did to Bajor, she pushed herself away from all that and went into scientific research. She is convinced that understanding the universe is better than dominating it. Also, the Cardassian people have done a lot of wrong in the past and the time has come to be a force for good. That said, she hasn't quite shaken off her upbringing as much as she likes to think and she pursues her calling aggressively, always pushing the envelope or testing some new theory. Sometimes this can blind her to other concerns.
She joined with Starfleet simply because they share her ideal of cooperation and a passion for exploration, whereas Cardassia was mostly concerned with rebuilding during her formative years. Naya doesn't want to sit still and retreat familiar ground.
Earlier in her career, her ship got caught in a temporal anomaly. Hekat found a way to break the ship out of a paradox-loop and in the process has become, somehow, sensitive to temporal disturbances on an instinctive level. (This did involve a plasma vent which killed the engineering crew, but as is the nature of temporal anomalies, it never happened after all and nobody remembers their screams - except for Naya. Who can live with it so long as she can keep her mind on new puzzles to solve.)
