Other Gear
- Compy
- Combined portable computer and multiformat communications equipment. Comes in many forms, from handheld pads to wristbands and visors.
- Goggles
- Protection against irritants and blinding lights, light amplification, infrared and ultraviolet vision, video display. Can be integrated with a regular or void helmet for half again the combined cost of both.
- Med kit
- Semi-automated tools and supplies for half a dozen field surgeries in a compact package.
- Stay bag
- About 1x2m sealable bag, keeps contents in stasis. Good for stabilizing the dying or food storage.
- Void suit
- Skintight, half-an-inch thick, with a bubble helmet. Protects from exposure to vacuum, radiation and temperature fluctuations, with breathable air for an hour of activity or two of rest. Somewhat resistant to being damaged but not enough to count as any kind of armor. Can be integrated with armor for half again the combined cost of both.
Fashion
Artificial Intelligence
Dumb AI
Not self-aware, although often designed to project the appearance of a personality (in the best tradition of "Your Plastic Pal Who's Fun To Be With"). Effectively a sophisticated user interface that can follow direct commands, even very complex ones, but has no real initiative or judgement of its own. Can be installed in any piece of technology by doubling the item's price, although utility depends entirely on the item; sometimes it's just fun to be able to talk to your gun, fridge or whatever. Humanoid machines driven by dumb AI, called "robots", are common in places undergoing technological development due to their versatility and the ability to interact with more primitive machinery and infrastructures designed for human use. Dumb AI have no stats or skills, but can use all the innate functions of the item (controlling a vehicle, firing a gun etc.) and attempt simple skill checks with no bonus.
Smart AI
Genuine digital persons, self-aware and fully sapient. Very rare due to some thorny legal issues (galactic law grants them full human rights, at least in theory) and the expensive and lengthy creation process. Can inhabit any suitably powerful hardware from computer systems ("ghost") through vehicles ("pilot") to synthetic humanoid bodies ("synthoid"); moving from one host system to another is somewhat traumatic, with something always lost in transition. Smart AI have skills like any character, and stats applicable to their body (if any).
Travel
Lazerdrives
Used on all kinds of vehicles from lazerdiscs to supercarriers for maneuvering in normal space. Broad beam lazers tuned for kinetic "push" provide thrust, and vectoring them allows rotation.
