Appearance and demeanor: Yui has her hair dyed a garish red and dresses as punk as possible, wearing combat boots and a hoodie with patches promoting left-wing political causes and punk bands. Including in combination with her school uniform, which has caused the occasional problem for her. While not unfriendly, she is shy and socially awkward, which has made her the target for bullying in the past.

NPCs

• Yui’s parents, Takahiro and Haruka Kawai (2). They are both leaders in the local branch of the Constitutional Democratic Party, the main center-left party in Japan. They love Yui but are ambivalent about her punk aesthetic and radical left-wing activism. They recognize that she shares a lot of their values and are happy that she wants to make the world a better place—but they find her rebellious, radical approach embarrassing and unsettling and fear that it might hurt their own political careers.
• Yui’s younger (15 years) sister, Emi Kawai (1). Emi is a popular, outgoing girl who is into idol culture. She finds her older sister dreadfully embarrassing and tries to avoid being seen with her in public.
• Takeo Ayase (2), the charismatic, de facto leader of Yui’s circle of activist friends. He attends a different high school.
• Akane Saotome (3), an older left-wing hacker, who is a mentor to Yui.
• Haruna Koayashi (1), Yui’s social studies teacher. She was a bit like Yui when she was younger and so better able to relate to her than most teachers. She shares some of Yuyi’s values, but is not an activist any more—though she still listens to punk rock.

Background

Yui is a rebel with a cause, into punk music and radical left-wing politics. This has caused her problems at school and tension with her parents. She says she doesn’t care, but secretly, she wishes people would accept her—and her beliefs. Indeed, she became a rebel because of her experiences being bullied for her social awkwardness. She is good with computers and likes to call herself a hacker. In practice, she’s more of a white-hat, providing tech support and security for local activist groups. She doesn’t have the skills to do things like steal information from the government or big corporations, at least not yet. She leaped at the chance to become a magical girl because she thought she would have the opportunity to make the world a better place.

She recently woke up one morning to find everyone shocked by her presence—everyone believed she had died the day before. This, of course, is more than a little disturbing to her. She wonders if she was able to use her powers to hack to reality to erase her own death or use her door powers to step through to an alternate reality—but somehow lost all memory of it.
