The Well
In the northeast corner of the green, the well is surrounded by circle of dusty (in summer), frozen (in winter), or muddy (fall and spring) ground. In all these seasons, innumerable footprints lead to and from the well. In fall and spring, deep puddles form around it, and slowly drain to the north towards the pond. Ducks waddle and hunt for food in these puddles in the mornings.
The well has a small timber roof, supported by two upright beams; these also support the hoist and bucket. A stone wall, three feet high, prevents animals and children from falling into the well. The water surface is about ten feet down in the summer and fall; about five feet down in winter and spring.

Transients
Anyone in Ingsby, except the lord of the manor and his family, can be found in the green at some time of the day. Women and older children fetch water from the well in the morning; a few villagers eat their mid-day meal sitting on the stock, under the oaks; and meetings of the whole village (such as manor court) are usually held here.
