BACKGROUND:
>Earthly Life<
Charles was born in the Western Germany of the early sixties with the name Karl J?ger. A child of middle-class parents, he had a relatively easy and secure, though rather boring childhood. He preferred to read books instead of going out to play like others his age and kept that habit throughout university later on, when others would party he would be at the dorm and read book after book. His main interest were stories of medieval times, as the stories from the war his father had told him had cultivated a disgust for modern combat in him. He instead turned towards tales of knighthood, loyalty and heroism, admiring the chivalry that had long since been lost in this world. His parents told him the basics of etiquette from a young age and Karl grew into a well-mannered and polite young men. When he was ten years old his father would let him attend the weekly gatherings of the Gentlemen's Society that he was part of. Young Karl didn't understand much of thr things he saw there, but the spirit of the gentlemen stuck with him, even though he would only notice later in his life. To his dismay the Society fell apart only a year later.
Karl finished school and studied at college, his grades slightly above average, and later took on a job in a governmental office. This was his own way of “knightly servitude to the king”, though of course there was neither a king, nor was the life as an official in any way chivalrous. He tried his hand at writing novels on the side, and managed to publish a number of stories about the medieval, but never landed a big hit.
As he grew older he accepted that he would just live a standard life after all and resolved to have a family at some point, however his search for a partner turned up fruitless for a long time. His life alternated between work and home, where he still eagerly read about knights and gentlemen without any major events for almost ten years, until that one day.
>Ennoblement<
Karl had just finished his daily work and stopped by at the bank to withdraw some money when he got caught up in a robbery. The robbers had taken a young girl hostage and received a large sum of money without any incidents. Afterwards the robbers took the hostage with them on their way to the escape vehicle they had parked outside. However the girl, scared and confused, struggled heavily and managed to break free and ran away screaming. The robber who had held her, though surprised, raised his gun reflexively and aimed at her. When Karl witnessed this he acted at once before even thinking for a second. He ran towards the robber, grabbed his arm and tackled him. As they both fell to the ground the last thing Karl saw was the barrel of the gun that was suddenly pointing right at his eye. Soon after he felt an unimaginable pain as the world turned black around him. He could barely hear the sirens of the incoming police cars. However the thought that he had been able to act chivalrous in this situation satisfied him as his consciousness faded.
>Life in the Chancel<
The last thing Karl expected when he died was that he would wake up again. However, that was exactly what happened. The room he awoke in was empty and without windows. He then was called to meet an entity called the “Imperator” and on his way to the audience he managed to catch a glimpse out of the window. He believed to be in the dream when he saw the fantastical clock- and steamwork-powered city below him. This belief was further strengthened when he was told that due to his deed before his death he had been appointed as a so-called Nobilis to reign over the realm of Chivalry under the Imperator's lead. He broke into loud laughter in the audience chamber and was dragged away quickly before the Imperator could kill him for his insolence, as it was already hard enough to find that one person to fit this strange domain. Finding another one would have been nearly impossible in such a short time. Karl was constrained with magice, which only furthered his idea that this was a dream, and dragged through half the city and towards one of the gates. From there he was lead down to the real world and to his own grave.
Only when he laid eyes upon the place where supposedly an empty coffin rested, as his body had disappeared when he was ennobled, he finally understood the reality of his situation. At first he was shocked, but that soon changed. Much to the surprise of the officials that had led him to the grave he turned around with a giant grin and started asking tons of questions about this new world he had been brought into. His life on earth, while not bad, had been dull, but this new life promised to be exciting.
As soon as he was back at the chancel he started bugging the people around him with questions about this new world and his role, eager to learn as much as he could. He changed his name to the pseudo-nobility-alias Charles Earl of Huntington to differentiate his new self from the man he had been before. The only thing left to remind him of his past was his lost right eye that had been covered up with an eyepatch now.
Charles quickly got well acquainted with his domain and his new powers. He could finally live his dream, to be a knight, and he combined it with the standards and etiquette of a true gentleman. This combination would have been regarded as weird and freakish down on Earth, but here in the Chancel it barely stood out, and noone would question his way of life since he was a Noble. He spent the first three years of being a Noble with exploring the limits and possibilities of his powers and strengthening his body and mind through training, as well as refining the ways of the gentlemen. He even wrote a book about his ideal way of life, called “The Gentleknight”.
After those three years Charles barely resembled the man he had been before anymore. He had fully become the Noble of Chivalry and was ready to rise to new tasks. He started roaming the Chancel every day, searching for people that needed his help, and he found them plenty. In fact, there were so many people in need of assistance that Charles decided he alone could not handle the task. He gathered a number of young homeless delinquents he had beat up with his cane when they were harassing a young lady and started training them. Since his domain covered diplomacy and sportsmanship he successfully convinced the young men to give him a chance and redirected the energy they had used for violence into sports. Bit by bit he mixed in lessons about etiquette and manners with the daily physical training and, without even noticing it, the youngsters started adopting Charles' way of life. Within a year he had reeducated them into what he would call the Young Gentlemen, though the term ignored the fact that those men were just as good at fighting as they were at serving tea and treating a lady. Charles then chose an empty clocktower in the middle of the city as his base (his normal home was a small mansion at the edge of the city) and declared himself and his squad as the Chancel's police force, the TownWatch (which he considered a clever wordplay due to the fact that they were stationed in a clocktower, a city's equivalent to a watch on a human's arm).
<Life today>
Ten years after his Ennoblement, Charles' position in the Chancel had been properly build up and secured. The TownWatch had been gratefully accepted by the populace and of course attracted the anger of the various gangs in the city, which was much to Charles' liking as it gave him someone to fight against. Young men from all over town had joined the Watch and the original members of the Young Gentlemen had taken over training them. They had grown into fine men and had been promoted to the title of “Ritter”. “The Gentleknight” had become a work that everyone in the Watch was obligated to have read, as it laid out the foundations on wich the Watch operated.
To train the young men in the art of serving the Watch had also expanded its base to include a caf?/club in which young ladies could relax and enjoy being treated by the soon-to-be Young Gentlemen. Once in a while Charles would join in to serve the customers himself, which would always cause quite a commotion amongst the female residents of the Chancel.
When he was not out on patrol or Noble duty, Charles would often enjoy a tea at his mansion together with his friend and advisor Victor. Victor was an elderly mechanic that the Watch had saved from bandits, and he had since become a good friend to Charles, especially since his words of wisdom and his analytic mind complemented Charles' easygoing personality well. Victor had also started taking care of managing the Watch's equipment and finally bestowed two presents upon Victor.
The first was an eye. Made from magitek and paired with a specially crafted monocle it replaced Charles' lost eye. The functions of the eye were unknown, but according to Victor it carried great potential. One of its most basic functions was simple magnification, but using his powers as a Noble Charles had modified with what he called “Gentlemen's Vision”, a skill that allowed him to view those in need of help within a several kilometre radius around him. The second present from Victor was a magitek-horse. According to his own words it was something he had been working on for several decades. Charles named the horse Sieghart and the sounds of its hooves quickly became a signal for all scum in the Chancel that a knight was coming for them.
Thus is the current situation. Charles patrols the city on the back of Sieghart, rushing from place to place to help those that his Gentleman's Vision shows him. The men of the TownWatch follow serve loyally and dutifully, striving to follow their master's footsteps as a true Gentleknight. The new trainees serve the women of the Chancel as butlers and hosts. Despite the efforts of the Watch there is still crime in the Chancel. There are some that say Charles himself supports several of the gangs in the Chancel with ressources to prevent the Watch from ever becoming obsolete. Surely though, a true gentleman would never do such a thing.... or would he?
