NATO Confidential file on ex-Soviet smuggling in the Balkans.

1. An unconfirmed intel source names Bardysh as Vsevolod Khartykin, a podpolkovnik lieutenant colonel in the Soviet Army. Curiously, no indication that he was KGB or GRU. Khartykin declined to serve in the Russian Army and left Russia by the end of 1991. For a good portion of 1992 he was on the staff of the Stalnaya Druzhina(1) mercenary unit assisting the Serb army in Bosnia. He was allegedly cashiered after a falling-out with the commander. There are photographs of Bardysh but none of Khartykin.

2. Austin also recognizes the name of Martin Kempfer, a Stasi agent who approached Austin before the destruction of the Berlin Wall. It is alleged in PLACID RUBY that he helped smuggle Czech weaponry into Bosnia for the SD. If so, he would have worked with Khartykin and might be able to give a physical description. He is currently employed as a procurer of escorts in Hamburg, although many of the names on his elite client list would be aghast if they saw his CV.
