Advanced Hack

An Advanced Game of Fantasy Awesomeness

The design of this game is cribbed shamelessly from Kirin Robinson’s excellent Old School Hack which, in turn, was based on Eric Provost’s likewise rockin’ Redbox Hack. Both are great games that attempt to capture the best parts of the early versions of a certain seminal dungeon-crawling, dragon-slaying role playing game while taking the mechanics in a new and decidedly different direction. Without Kirin’s and Eric’s innovative work, and the generosity with which they released their games into the wild for anyone to tweak and play, this hack-of-a-hack-of-a-hack would not exist.

Encouragement and support have come to me from my son, Ian, and our most excellent gaming group. Though the roster of participants has changed over the years, I’ve been playing with some of these guys since high school in the 1970s. Without them I never would have gotten into tabletop gaming in the first place.

Finally, a shout out to the legacy of tabletop roleplaying games that Gary Gygax, Dave Arneson and their friends and fellow authors have left us. Without them none of these awesome adventures would have been possible. Rest in peace, heroes.
