Pre-Game Years

Years 0-5

Varius was born Bertran, in a small village in the Pyrenees. His father was the village blacksmith, skilled by virtue of the Dwarf Blood that Bertran also inherited. Bertran spent his early years mostly in the nearby hills, occasionally interacting with the nearby Faeries there, though for the most part the Faerie lore ability reflects the intuitive understanding of them he gets from his blood. In his early years, Bertran had an active childhood.

Bertran gets Catalan 5 as his native language, and also Awareness 2 (15), Athletics 2 (15), and Brawl 2 (15) for a total of 45 XP spent

Years 6-11

As Bertran grew up, his Gift manifested itself. He lost what friends he had, and his father began to keep him at home and out of public view. Bored at with little to do, Bertran spent most of his time watching his father work, until the latter started to train him in earnest in hopes of keeping him out of trouble. His father was unsurprised that he showed great skill in smithing - it was in the blood, after all.. In addition to blacksmithing, Bertran picked up enough woodworking to fashion a hilt, enough leatherworking to fashion straps, and enough patience to keep at work. Bertran worked on these skills in his own time, improving them beyond the basics. He finds crafting fun, and in any case since his father never let him out of the house he had nothing really else to do. He seemed to be on track to becoming a reclusive village craftsman, unliked but at least respected, when he was scouted for apprenticship.

The 90 XP from these years is spent on: Concentration 2 (15), Craft: Blacksmith 3 (45), Craft: Leatherworker 2 (15), Craft: Woodworker 2 (15)

Apprenticeship (12-26)

Not long before his 11th birthday a Verditius maga named Clara, looking for Gifted apprentices from craftsmen's households, recognized Bertran's talents and took him away. Bertran took to magic with if anything greater ease than smithing, and blossomed under Clara's tutelage. In true Verditius Fashion, she made sure that he also improved his crafting skills, and spent time teaching him to craft with magic as well as hands. After his Gauntlet, he took the name Varius, meaning "versatile".

Clara is a highly skilled Verditius, and a devout member of the Cult of Vulcan. Like many older Verditius that are deeply advanced in the Mysteries of the House, she is incredibly arrogant, regards those around her as of less worth than herself, and is engaged in a long-running pointless feud with a Verditius magus from the Iberian Tribunal. Varius greatly respects her skills, but regards her also as an example of what not to become.
