Codex - Robert Grey
Robert Gray (the name given to him by social workers; he doesn’t know his real name) was abandoned and grew up in the foster care system. Like many kids, he idealized certain superheroes, including Captain America.
After running away from abusive foster parents, Robert was struggling to survive and he soon took to a life of crime. He ended up working for various larcenous supervillains, as nothing more than dumb hired muscle, and rationalized the crimes away; after all the business had insurance, hadn’t they? And he avoided harming innocent people, as well.
Eventually Robert ended up working for Loki, on another theft, of a book of occult knowledge, this time in the past, in 1622 in Heidelberg. It was during this time that Loki revealed just how insane he truly was, and that he had no compunctions about killing the innocent.
Robert sacrificed himself to (try) and destroy the book, and to save Captain America, who had been a hero to him as a boy. The book wasn’t destroyed, however. As he lay dying, he saw someone steal the (damaged but relatively intact) book. Perhaps this is why he came back as a ghost, bound to the University of Heidelberg
He then spent centuries researching ways to find the book, and a way to free himself. During this time he realized a previously untapped well of intelligence in him, a love of learning, and that he had power over works of fiction. He also had time to think over his past, and realize the evil deeds he had done.
Finally, it was the age of the Internet, and the rise of online self publishing. Robert wrote a book that had the required artifact and, after taking it into the real world, used it to free himself Now, his goal is to find the book, but also to make up for his previous misdeeds, using the codename Codex. And, perhaps, to also find out who his birth parents are.

M.A.N.O.W.A.R. - Cpl. Harry Davis
Marine Assault Naval Operations War And Reconnaissance. Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., British National operating under international auspices.
Harry had been a Royal Marine from the moment he was old enough to legally buy a pint. It was a hard life but the only one he'd ever wanted, the one his dad had. The one that took his dad from him, made him a hero. That was the way to die as far as Harry was concerned, in war. Saving people, earning peace, doing the things other people couldn't do to protect themselves.
Of course nothing in the world is ever as clear cut as a child dreams it will be, and when Harry was recruited to the SBS the moral lines grew even wavier. But he neither balked nor blinked at any orders, he served as was ordered to. Until the day he was nearly fatally injured, he lost several limbs in a botched explosive attachment, it was sometthing he had done a hundred times but on the hundred and first luck was against him.
Word had circled the world that S.H.I.E.L.D was looking for wounded veterans for a project. Harry couldn't sign up fast enough. Vetting was long and thorough but like a good Marine he made it through. In fact he was the only one to do so that had his particular affinity for water. While the others were processed into the latest iteration of the Deathlok Programme something special awaited Harry, Project M.A.N.O.W.A.R. The project was the brainchild of one Dr Lemuel Dorcas. Dr. Dorcas along side his assistant Dr. Walter Newell were tasked by S.H.I.E.L.D with creating a prototype aquatic super soldier for use in Maritime operations.
Dr. Dorcas' main focus was in biology and he pushed heavily for the right to tamper with Harry's Genetic code. At each turn he was rebuffed by his superiors and sent back to test his theories on animals. It was clear the hot headed doctor chafed at this, a fact he did not keep secret. It gave Harry extra time to learn S.H.I.E.L.D protocol to learn how to be a better agent, something he took an exceptional focus in, determined to serve here as well as he had elsewhere.
One night Dr. Dorcas burst into Harry's room frantically trying to inject him with what was highly unlikely to be any kind of antibiotic. Even on only one full limb Harry was a Marine, more than that he was a Swimmer Canoeist. He couldn't overcome the mad doctor, but he held him off until a fellow Agent burst in and helped. In the fight Dr. Dorcas was accidentally injected with his own formula. In a panicked rage he threw off both men and fled, not having been seen since.
This left Project M.A.N.O.W.A.R solely in the hands of Dr. Newell who proceeded with a purely cybernetic approach.
When S.H.I.E.L.D was destroyed Harry went to sea, it was the safest place to not be found, not compromise his family and friends. It is only in recent time he has returned to a city rather than floating from coastal town to town. Without the agency Harry has no idea what to live for. He knows he can't go back to Britain, can't see his girlfriend. Though it's likely been long enough she's moved on. Can't contact any old squadmates without compromising them. Fortunately he's able to pass for entirely normal but he still feels apart from humanity, his senses no longer being organic he feels detached.
It has left him embittered and abrasive. But he remains every inch a royal Marine even if he cannot remember what it means to be S.H.I.E.L.D or indeed if it ever meant anything...

Newton - Blanche "B" Clementine de Vere
Age: 18
Nationality: Canadian
Powers: Mutant Gravity Manipulator
Blanche (it's a family name!) is a graduate of the Xavier school for Gifted Youngsters. No she wasn't an X-men. Some people attend for the education (though she'd trained extensively in the danger room her parents forbid Xavier from letting her go on missions on pain of reducing funding to Mutants Sans Frontiers). Up until now she'd enjoyed a sheltered life. Her parents loved her and accepted her as a mutant without a problem (her dad runs a tech company and geeks out over her powers). She went to Xavier's and though she was surrounded by students with tragic backstories she didn't really see anti-mutant prejudice in person.
That changed when she went to college in Berkley and got involved with the San Francisco mutant community. She saw first hand the prejudice that mutants suffer from and this time there wasn't anyone else around to do anything about it so she stepped up, got into her old Danger room uniform and started fighting the good fight!
Complicating matters is her crush, Nadiya, fellow college student and aspiring journalist she met through the Berkley mutant rights group. Nadiya is a mutant herself but when she was younger she was caught in the crossfire between X-Men and Brotherhood. Since then she's embraced a strictly non-violence political platform and seems to dislike the X-Men and people like them.

Raphael "Ras" Mann
In the dawn of humanity an angel was so fascinated by the world that it deserted from Heaven and came to Earth to dwell among mortals. In the tens of thousands of years since then it learned, with great effort and at no small cost, how to be just a person among many, until heavenly glory and searing radiance were but hazy memories, unwanted and carefully buried, the angel little more than a man. And the man was happy.
Raphael, as he now calls himself, has lived through all of human history, been everywhere and done everything at one point or another, knows something about everything and speaks every language there is. Currently he works as a licensed private investigator in San Francisco, specializing in missing persons, based out of a small studio apartment in the Tenderloin near Union Square. He works mostly alone, but has occasionally consulted for organizations like S.H.I.E.L.D., the SFPD and the Child Protective Services, in addition to volunteering with various charities and NPOs. He's well known for going out of his way for anyone in genuine need, with or without compensation, and part of his good reputation on the street is due to just about every clique or community out there having at least one member he's helped out at some point, in some way. Yet despite being friendly with everyone, he seems to have no close friends or personal relationships beyond his part time secretary-cum-accountant Camilla Fairborough (just friends, honest).
Few people know about Raphael's powers aside from a handful of past clients, although this is more due to his general reluctance to use them rather than active secrecy, and virtually no one alive knows his true origin. His papers say he was born in 1985 in Cambridge to a then unknown mother who died at childbirth, grew up in an orphanage and came to USA in 2004 after investigators executing his "late father's" will finally managed to track him down...

Camilla Fairborough
Raphael's part time assistant and closest friend, a struggling young urban professional who aced a double major and feels resentful about being no more successful for it. Walks with a limp and a cane due to a traffic accident years ago.
