Tav didn't quite come from the bottom of the pile, but the slums of Gyffer weren't far off. Prospects at home were limited, and faced with the choice of poverty or crime he joined the Marines as a way out.
His career was largely unremarkable, until it wasn't. He encountered Scott in his second term, when hostile action necessitated the evacuation of civilians. After four terms he was considering mustering out, but he caught his COs eye and they offered to help him along. So he stayed.
Things went sideways after that. When an op went wrong he survived - but many of his unit didn't. He did what he could until they were evacuated to a civilian hospital. He met Xan there, who was recovering from an accident, while the survivors waited to ship out. Disillusioned by being hung out to dry by the brass he mustered out and went into private security.
