Complications[edit]

Motivation: The world has been governed by at best the well-meaning but short sighted to at worst the outright compromised and corrupt. That's why Oracle become a "villain" in the first place, to overthrow the fools in charge so that intelligent and enlightened individuals such as himself could run things instead.

Now aliens have conquered the Earth and things are even worse. At least the previous order had to care about human civilization in some form. And most of Oracle's resources and followers were lost in the destruction wrought. But there is a silver lining. The V'sori invasion has topped every legitimate government on the planet. Once they are kicked off of Earth someone will have to fill that vacuum. Whoever is responsible for liberating the world from the invaders will have a golden opportunity to reshape it to their liking. Oracle intends have that opportunity..

Oracle Knows Best Being both a genius and a prophet, Oracle can't help but think he knows the most out of everyone in the room. Most of the times it's not a big enough deal. But sometimes his faith in his own knowledge and intellectual superiority can cause problems for him, whether it's due to rubbing someone the wrong way or thinking he knows more than he does about a subject.

Baggage From A Past Life: Before his current career, Oracle was actually a superhero. A quite accomplished one too, with many villains thwarted and put behind bars and a large number of fans and admirers.

Some of those villains refuse to see their former nemesis turned colleague's actions as "just part of the job" and hold a grudge to this day. And many of those former fans and and admirers hold a deep sense of betrayal when Oracle turned against his fellow heroes and went villain. These attitudes persist even under current circumstances and could occasionally cause problems for Oracle.

Some Call Him Mad: Then there are those who whisper that the reason Oracle turned to villainy was because regularaly glimpsing apocalyptic and dystopian futures drove him crazy. This is of course untrue but those responsible for rumors and slander rarely care about veracity. Belief in this theory of madness is far from universal but there are enough people who have bought into it to cause some to have doubts in the credibility of some of Oracle's predictions. Some of the disbelief of his warning to heroes and governments about the V'sori's true intentions no doubt was the result of this misconception some had regarding his mental state.

Quirk (Fanboy): Oracle is an avid fan of science fiction, fantasy and geeky pop culture. He drops references to both well known and obscure works. He collects memorabilia from movies and shows. He even incorporates it into his super persona. He fancies himself a real life version of the Doctor, complete with a Sonic Gravitic Screwdriver and Companions (the latest his teammates when he joins them).

While usually charming and humanizing, this tendency can cause some difficulties. Some minor, such as annoying people when he drops a quote or reference they don't recognize as part of an explanation about something to potential trouble like stealing the Delorean from Back to The Future or insisting on rescuing an actor from V'sori custody because she played Nurse Chapel on Strange New Worlds

Enemy: The V'sori and everyone on their side.

Background[edit]

Like many people, Anthony Fortune grew up wanting to make the world a better place. Unlike many people, Anthony possessed two gifts that would enable him to have a much bigger impact that most, an intellect some would describe as godlike and psychic abilities that enabled him to perceive beyond the here and now. Anthony was able to exploit both gifts to make himself even more potent, peering into potential futures to view scientific and technological advancements and then reverse engineering what he saw to create wonders in the present.

At first Anthony tried to work within the rules, using his talents and power to improve the world as both a philanthropic technology mogul and the superhero Oracle. But despite his best efforts he found such limitations obstructed his attempts to truly make the world a better place. He saw the terrible potential futures that lay ahead and decided that the only way he could steer humanity toward a brighter destiny was to just do whatever it took to achieve what was needed, no matter who or what stood in his way.

So, in popular parlance, he "broke bad" and founded FATE, The Federation for Advancing Technocratic Enlightenment. A clandestine organization of scientists, technologists and thinkers in every field, its purpose was to subvert and eventually overthrow all existing governments and other significant power structures to usher in a new age in which those qualified to make the big decisions due to their knowledge and intellect would shape society towards a better tomorrow.

Obviously his former colleagues in the hero community did not take Anthony's change in methodology well at all. For his part, Oracle had nothing but disdain for the superhero community, seeing them as fools who let their naive respect for laws and governments lead them into upholding a corrupt and self destructive status quo rather doing what it took to really save the world.

Unfortunately, it was this rift that caused the heroes he reached out to with the warning that the V'sori were up to no good to dismiss his words as part of some ploy to manipulate circumstances to FATE'S benefit. Not only that but they advised any governments he contacted with the same warning to view his claims with the same skepticism. That, coupled with his reputation as a traitor and supervillain, ensured any words he had to say about the V'sori fell on deaf ears.

So he took the only option he could. Told every member of FATE to leave major cities with whatever resources they could manage to take with them and go into hiding as best they can. He followed his own advice and took what technology he could with him, hiding what he couldn't readily carry in caches in remote locales before finding a safe place to sit things out.

In the aftermath of the V'sori victory, Oracle emerged to find that many of his caches had been destroyed by his anti-tampering protocols or appropriated by others. As for the members of FATE, many were dead, others pledged their loyalty to other groups and some even had the gall to turn quisling and cozy up to the invaders and their human pawns. All he had to fight the V'sori were his personal abilities and the devices he had on his person.
