Ótr was a playful gnome who lived by a riverbank, loving to swim and splash in the river with his friends, the otters. (Yes, otters burrow.) He often took their form with his magic and loved to make illusions to entertain them. He strung up nets across the river to catch both fish and valuables washed downstream.

Alas, he was hated by a greedy gnome named Andvari who lived beneath a waterfall upstream, and often took the form of a fish. Ótr always apologized profusely when he accidentally caught Andvari in his nets, but Andvari still blamed him when a hoard of his beloved gold and rings went missing. So Ótr was forced to flee, and now wanders the world getting into trouble and searching for friends who are as fun-loving as the otters were.
