HISTORY:

Mark Peters was a good pilot; no he was a fantastic pilot. He could turn a plane on a penny. Friends believed he could see the wind currents in his mind and react to them to allow his plane to do things that no other pilot could. Mark ran a small cargo company with his business partner Jeff Elsom. Jeff took care of the jobs and Mark took care of the flying. This worked out well for many years until Jeff’s mounting gambling debts started to cloud his business judgement. Way in over his head to one of the larger Mafia families he took a job carrying illegal substances across state lines unknown to Mark. Half way through one such flight Mark, not realising what his cargo was started to get engine problems (they had been sabotaged by a rival gangster family). Sending out a mayday Mark grabbed his parachute and headed for the door it. Was as he was buckling up that he noticed one of the boxes had split and on the floor were packets of white powder. Realising what he was carrying he grabbed one and secured it under his flight jacket with the intention of confronting Jeff when he had landed. He made a clean jump and at the right altitude pulled the cord only to find that some of the cables had been cut. Mark did manage to make it to the ground but the landing was not good. Later in hospital the doctor informed Mark he had broken his back and that he would never gain the use of his legs again. Also waiting for him was the police who wanted to know why he had a large packet of drugs on his person. At the trial Jeff gave evidence against Mark showing false information that Mark had in fact brought in the job. The owner of the casino where Jeff gambled also gave evidence that Mark had lost big time at the tables thus giving the prosecution ammunition for motive. Mark was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years.

After doing his time Mark returned to society a beaten man with no job and no future he found a bottle and crawled into it. Mark spent the next two years living on the streets and was a common site sitting in his wheel chair begging for money to get his next bottle of gut rot. Then one day a well-dressed oriental looking man approached him saying that his master would like to help get him back on the straight road to life. Mark told him where to go and carried on getting drunk but every day for the next four weeks the same man would approach him and offer the same help. In the end Mark realised that if he did meet this guys boss he could at least get a bottle or two out of it so the next time the young man came to him he accepted. Mark was taken to a very Large secluded house where he was introduced to an elderly gentleman by the name of Lou Chi. Mr Chi was a wealthy businessman who had run foul of the Mafia some years earlier and as a result had lost all of his family in a gangland shooting. Chi had spent the intervening years studying the mafia operations and realised that although a man of wealth he would not be able to take revenge directly. He said that Mark’s case had come to his attention and he was prepared to offer Mark the ability to get his life back in exchange for killing all the mafia he came across. Mark found this hilarious and a little sick pointing out that if Mr. Chi had not noticed he was crippled. Mr. Chi replied that that could be overcome, that also over the years he had come across a scroll that was able to give a man his hearts desire. Now Mark started to think this man mad with his grieve, why not use the scroll to destroy the mafia if it was as powerful as he believed. The scroll, informed Mr. Chi was not to be used for evil thoughts but it could give Mark the one thing he desired more than anything else the use of his legs. Mr. Chi realised this was a lot to take in and Mark should think it over for a while offering him a room in his house until he had made his decion. Over the next couple of days Mark sobered up and spent evening with Mr. Chi discussing many subjects but never touching on the issue at hand. Mark came to like the old man and felt sad for his loss so much so that one evening he announced that he would do the ritual for him, believing that it would fail but at least it would convince the old man to move on with his life. The night of the ritual arrived and Mark was asked to lay on the floor in the middle a circle of candles. As the ceremony started Mark felt at piece for the first time in many years. At the climax of the ritual Chi Asked Mark to concentrate on the one thing in the world he wanted more than anything else. As the last words were issued the room fell silent. Minutes passed but finally Chi asked Mark to stand up putting all his will into it Mark tried only to collapse seconds later from the effort with no positive results, Mark was still as crippled as he was before the ceremony. Mr. Chi hung his head to hid his grieve from his friend and made to leave. Mark was so upset that he could not help the old man after all the kindness he had shown that before he knew what was happening he was standing next to him in the door way. With surprise they both looked down realising that Mark had not in fact walked over the Chi but had floated. With an exited look on his face he asked Mark what he his hearts desire had been, well answered Mark walking would have been great but all I’ve ever wanted to do again was fly.

Over the following months they tested his powers to find their limitations. Mark was able to fly at reasonable speeds, hover and dive, he found he was more agile in the air than when he had had his legs and could reach altitudes that would have made him pass out if he had been in a plane. Realising for the first time that he could repay the old man’s kindness Mark started learning skills that would help him in his fight against the Mafia. Firstly the old man got instructors to teach him how to fight hand to hand then more instructors to teach him to shoot guns. Lastly he hired people to teach him how to pick locks and gather information. After three more years of training they both agreed that Mark was skilled enough to go out and start his rain of terror on the villains that suckled off the poor and innocent of the city. On the night of his first foray into the dark would of crime Chi presented Mark with a fight suit lined with mesh telling him it was designed to help protect him from small arms fire and knife attacks. And the flight cap had anti flash goggles. Thus started the career of the Airman protector of the streets and terror of the criminals.
