Spelunker

Real Name: Madeleine Cooper

Abilities

Illusions

Madeleine has blown the doors of perception wide open. Her sight is swamped by the psychic impressions of what others see, not their raw sensory feed but a patchwork of perception—highly processed visual information. However, she can push right back out. And when she pushes it out, the signal swamps what sensory information the subject is receiving. Broad or narrow, any perception the brain can create, Spelunker can drop down into Plato's Cave and do the right (metaphysical) hand gestures to create the desired shadow on the wall.

Psychic Weapons

That part about overwhelming signals from actual sensory neurons? Yeah, it allows for inducing psychosomatic damage and sizzling nerves to a crisp. Oh and inflicting deep psychic trauma by setting up nightmare feedback loops, but honestly that's stuff she'd rather stay away from. Much nicer to induce permanent pain in the leg than to convince someone they killed their best friend and never let their mind move away from it.

Moment of Truth

This is when you show them what you really are. Whether you’re the hero underneath the rebel facade...or the one who can make the hard choices heroes can’t make. You do whatever it takes to show that truth, whether it’s saving the day from a terrible villain or stopping a bad guy once and for all. Of course, once you’ve shown what you really are, there’s no going back to playing the clown...

Conditions

[ x ] Afraid (-2 to Directly Engage a Threat)

[ x ] Angry (-2 to Comfort or Support or Pierce the Mask)

[ x ] Guilty (-2 to Provoke Someone or Assess the Situation)

[ ] Hopeless (-2 to Unleash Your Powers)

[ X ] Insecure (-2 to Defend Someone or Reject Others' Influence)

Team Moves

When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if they think you’re cool. If they say yes, give them In uence and take In uence over them. If they say no, mark a condition or spurn them immediately. If they’re a teammate, then either way, add a Team to the pool.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, give them In uence over you, and ask them who they’d like you to be. Mark potential if you show them that person. If they’re a teammate, add a Team to the pool no matter what.

Delinquent Moves

Mary Contrary

When someone tries to pierce your mask, comfort or support you, or provoke you, you can interfere. Roll + Superior. On a hit, they take a -2 on their roll. On a 10+, you also take Influence over them or clear a condition. On a miss, they get a 10+ no matter what they rolled and you mark a condition of their choice.

Criminal Mind

Can always ask following when assessing, even on a miss.

what here is useful or valuable to me?

how could I best infuriate or provoke ____________?

what’s the best way in/way past?

Are You Watching Closely?

When you mislead, distract, or trick someone, roll + Superior. On a hit, they are fooled, at least for a moment.

Backstory

How did you get your powers

What she says: By listening to How to Become Clairvoyant too many times at too young an age and following through, unlocking her third eye, and then fourth, and then fifth, and then… until she realized that seeing and making things be seen were the same thing. What she actually did: Get in with a dodgy crowd as she felt the first twinges of psychic abilities and use psychotropics even the military considers too dangerous and immoral. Luckily they just blew open the limits of minor psychic talent as opposed to turning her into a living gateway for nightmare creatures to crawl through.

What do you do for fun?

Be instagram famous, say inflammatory things in interviews, and try new things to stay ahead of the creeping fear that there's more unlocked in her mind than is obviously so at the moment.

Who, outside the team, thinks better of you than you do?

Definitely her aunt who keeps insisting that she follow through with an actual education and all that. Lots of guilt tripping on that front.

Why do you try to be a hero?

Again with Aunt Diane's guilt tripping. Stop wasting your life and powers on trivial things. If you were a villain even at least you'd be accomplishing something. There's a new teen super team starting, it can't hurt to go and try.

Why do you care about the team?

What she says: Something something mutualism. If I don't care about these losers who will. Etc. etc. Why she actually does: Because they'll have her, after both going the neutral fame route of being a super and after how the first fight went down.

We totally broke some major rules to win the ght. What rules did we break? Whose rules were they?

There's a code between masks that you don't reveal identities, it is across villains and heroes. An unspoken rule in the community. You do that and you've declared outright war on the person. Because you've taken that part of their life away without their consent.

We outed the Brute in the fight. And it stunned him and the rest of those we were fighting enough to get the edge.

And Spelunker for one doesn't feel bad about it at all. Eugene doesn't deserve anything more than rotting in a cell capable of holding him.
