Background: Aoife Ni Muireen was born not with a silver spoon in her mouth but - as some people put it - at the end of the rainbow. Luck - mostly good - has played a huge part in her life and her choices. When her application to college (Trinity) was lost in transit and it looked like she'd have to go elsewhere, it was found just as another student withdrew from consideration, and she got in anyway. When a traffic accident caused her to be late for her finals, she got there to learn that the ones she was scheduled for had been postponed.

Her entire life has worked in that manner. She tries not to let it control her actions, and does possess enough self-awareness to prepare in the event of bad luck that lasts longer, but she wouldn't be human if she didn't count on her luck more than she really should.

Her Earthforce career was little different. A capable pilot, her luck often proved the linchpin of success for her - and almost as often, the cause of failure.

Able to coax more out of engines than the engineers would like, she was the fastest starpilot in her squadron (and most others). On a dare once, she raced her entire squadron in a cargo shuttle, beating them handily. What she doesn't tell in the story is that the rest of the squadron often found themselves having to go around obstacles that appeared after she was past, and that she cut a path through the atmosphere where their Furies couldn't go.

She became rather addicted to racing. Earthforce would have looked the other way, as she never gambled on her races, but one day the ship her sponsor put up wasn't working, so she raced in her 'Fury. That was too much for her superiors, and she was cashiered. Since most of the companies she raced for wanted to keep in good standing with Earthforce, she wasn't able to race on those circuits anymore. Since then, she's been wandering the galaxy looking for races and the people who sponsor them, often getting into races of questionable legality.

The last race she entered ended with the deaths of six racers and more than two dozen onlookers. While she herself was cleared, it's further damaged her reputation, and now no one will touch her.

Then came Mr. Reno, in need of a fast pilot. She's pretty sure that not all his business is on the up-and-up, but at this point, she doesn't have a lot of choice.
