Backstory

Arnet Leeds was born to a family of retro-engineers who came to Spire when he was a baby; he's known nothing else. He was part of the Brazacott Technical Institute, using his moderate knowledge to develop new technologies and figure out arcane connections between them, but it really seemed easier to use his talents to embezzle large sums of money through false work orders, skimming parts off of shipments, and doing black-market work on the side. Until he got caught.

Brazzacot's masters were not amused at the loss of resources, but they were impressed by Arnet's skills. They implanted a one-directional fragment of their crystal Intelligence network, allowing them to send him messages but not allowing him to tap into the network, and sent him into the Heart to gather rare goods, technological wonders, and whatever else might pay off his truly massive debt. Arnet would like nothing more than to tell them to sod off, but he's concerned that they can probably track him through the crystal and maybe possibly make it explode inside his head. He's really not sure. He's not sure that they're sure. Better not to force the issue.

But this job! This job could be the one that gets Arnet clear once and for all - or that finds him a way to burn that stupid crystal out of his brain without, you know, burning his brain out of his brain.

Recently, you and another character returned from a delve with an item for a wealthy patron. They wouldn’t give it up – why, and what was it?

Greyson and Arnet did a job together, acquiring an interesting piece of Heart-tainted technology for a wealthy patron working for one of the many factions plotting in the Spire, but Arnet convinced Greyson to claim to the patron that they could not acquire it, and then quietly give the item to the Brazzacot Institute instead.
