Astrolabe is an albino and this coupled with his sickly health, made his superstitious miner parents think him cursed and give him up to the local religious mission on the bleak planet he was born. Astrolabe had an unhappy childhood with the monks and was glad that when his psychic powers manifested it was decided that he would serve the Imperial Navy. The academy was no better - he was bullied and the frequent mishaps that occurred in his surroundings and his appearance led to him leaving the academy when of age, before graduation. Alone and with no means of support, he met Captain Summergate and was taken on as her co-pilot and navigator. Astrolabe has found the family he has looked for all his life.
