Auvbern was born among the beggars in the streets of Ko-Sha, and terrorised the law-abiding citizens of the famous city-state in one of its many child gangs for much of the first decade of his life. That all ended when the first signs of his natural aptitude for fire elementalism manifested at the age of eight. As if by some miracle, no one was hurt, though one very wealthy merchant lost most of his fortune that day.

Nevertheless, the display of his talents caused the attention of people who normally did not take an interest in urchins, and so it came to be that a group of concerned citizens decided that such a gifted young man should not waste away in the gutters, especially not the gutters of Ko-Sha. They were willing to sponsor the best tuition, as long as it was far away. In short, they sent him to study thaumaturgy on the isle of Ablarang.

Life in the Phlogistonic Symposium was not so bad at first: Steady meals, exciting subjects to study and "debating" (which really was just quarrelling over non-material matters) was fun. It was not until he got older and had better control of his powers that he started to feel ill at ease. He noticed that the female magi would always be extraordinarily kind to him, but got chastised when he took a pair of scissors, thread and needle, and remade his robes into something more raunchy. His inattention would time and again cause problems during spellcasting(not exactly a new problem among the fire magi).

A couple of weeks ago, things came to an end. Aubern had been struggling hard to learn his second spell, Fire ball, when he noticed a rather irritating scab on his knee.

A few seconds was all it took, and soon a lot of precious things were in the path of an ever-expanding ring of fire.

Aubern was, to tell the truth, rather unenthusiastic about taking responsibility for his actions, and grabbed a purse of silver pieces that belonged to one of his more esteemed tutors. Then he ran.
