Barnabas was a notorious spiritualist and mystic. He held seances for money and pursued membership in a hermetic society, and was just barely smart enough to realize that he was a charlatan. But the family fortunes had fallen on hard times, and as the last scion it was his job to keep the roof on the manor house from falling in, even if that was the most he could accomplish. He is a Byronic gentleman of a somewhat scurrilous and roguish nature, who has little use for any conventional means of advancement such as a commission in the Navy or anything resembling work. Despite his pretensions to great learning, he also has no particular ability with scholarship.

He was brought in on this operation because of the occult nature of the Device and the rumors of supernatural goings-on associated with it. Far be it from him to tell the august gentlemen of the League that he was a mere humbug! It will also give him an unparalleled opportunity to avoid his creditors without appearing to do so.
