Backstory

Brother Foresight—born Guan Bai—is the child of high-ranking Triad members. While his parents intended him to follow in their footsteps, it quickly became clear to them that he would never make a good criminal. Although a skilled fighter, he was too kind-hearted and naïve to make a good Triad member. They had to shelter him from much of what the Triad did, for the simple reason that he would cheerfully blurt out such information to strangers. When he showed an interest in becoming a Buddhist monk, they not only gave him their blessing, but packed him off as quickly as possible to get him out of their hair.

Guan Bai found his way to a Shaolin monastery, where his martial arts skills and kind heart were appreciated. His clueless, however, remained a problem. When he was formally ordained as a monk, his teachers gave him the religious name Brother Foresight (Shenmouyanlu) as something to aspire to. Unfortunately, he has not made much progress in that direction. He also had a history of sneaking out of the monastery and breaking into places he didn’t belong—not out of malice, but out of naïve curiosity and a lack of discipline. His teachers had to intervene on his behalf enough times that it became a problem. Deciding he would not learn the lessons he need in the monastery, his teachers have sent Brother Foresight to wander the world, in the hope that he might learn a little wisdom and discipline. So far, he hasn’t.

Brother Foresight has not hesitated to leap into fights to help people he saw being bullied or otherwise unfairly treated. In one case, he beat up the son of a corrupt local magistrate and his goons—something that has put him on the Alliance’s radar. Officially, they want to question him as part of their investigation into local corruption. But do they actually want to cover that corruption up?
