'''Description'''

Andy's costume is off-white with reflective stripes similar to a fire-fighter uniform and includes a helmet with a gas mask. The major visual difference, besides the color, is that his costume features a large blue star of life (the paramedic's symbol) on the chest and the outfit looks less bulky. The actual construction is radically different of course.

'''Backstory'''

Andy acquired his powers while studying extra-dimensional physics as a post-doc. One night, he was conducting a high energy physics experiment to explore the possibility of short cutting through these other dimensions. Naturally, something went wrong and the resulting explosion threw him into another dimension. The tireless efforts of his good friend Dr. Savalas managed to partially recreate the experiment and bring him home. Since then he has acquired the amazing ability to open gateways between one location and another in our world (rather like the portals from Portal, but without the need to anchor them to a surface). Andy’s theory is that he has maintained a connection with the alternate dimension and that things are actually passing briefly through that dimension when going through one of his “portals”. These portals appear to be influenced by gravity fields in some way, because he is only able to open them perpendicular to the earth’s surface. He is curious whether this would change in space or perhaps deep in the earth, but such journey’s are currently beyond his means. Andy was and still is super excited to have powers (no angsting here), because that’s like super cool and think of all the scientific possibilities. His first week after discovering the ability consisted of numerous experiments.

Unfortunately, being mysteriously missing in another dimension for three months, presumed dead, after the explosion of millions of dollars worth of equipment does not sit well with university administrators or sponsors. Andy’s job was not waiting for him and his reputation was ruined. With science closed to him, he decided to pursue being a superhero. He had the powers after all. Andy found that he was pretty bad at vigilante justice. For one, he’s not very good at dealing justice with his fists, because he’s not really good at doing anything with his fists. For another, it’s really hard to just find crime to stop. Without super hearing or some other way of being alerted, Andy spent many nights on patrol with nary a mugging spotted. Also, it’s really cold wandering around a Campaign City at two in the morning in spandex and Andy is not a fan of shivering. Later iterations of his costume did at least include hand warmers.

Andy was very near to giving up the whole thing, when he happened to spot smoke in the distance. Finally, a situation where he was useful. He jumped from one floor to the next, opening portals for people to get out and once the building was taking others to the hospital. Then he opened a portal under the artistic reflecting pond out front and connected it to the space above the fire to dampen things until the trucks could arrive. The next day he became the first superhero dedicated to assisting the city’s Fire Department. He most often works with the Engine 33 crew and has a good working relationship with them. He redesigned his costume and rebranded himself Asclepius, after the Greek god of medicine. His symbol became a stylized version of the Star of Life to let people know he was there to help (also he’s partial to blue and white). He quickly discovered that Asclepius was too hard for people to say or remember and the firefighters he crossed paths with frequently just started calling him Blue Star. It stuck and so he gave up trying to fight it. He was relieved that he had not gone with his original idea of using the Rod of Asclepius as his symbol. He got a day job as an EMT to help better assess what to do when he arrived first on a scene and get an inside track on when bad things are happening. Though he primarily is concerned with saving lives and not stopping crime, he has crossed paths with some super villains at the scene of fires. Specifically, he has faced down Pyro-Man-iac and the Fallen Star.
