Zelaia is an experimental engineer through and through. She has little greater love than taking things apart and putting them back together (better). To her, the failures and repair of machinery are far more interesting than the failures of the sapient mind, which tend toward lust and selfishness around her species.  She is very cautious in terms of her pheromonal/hormonal suppressants, though this was not always the case. She learned the importance of the drugs around non-Deltans after destroying the composure of her Vulcan roommate in her first year at the Starfleet Academy. She still feels guilt towards her former roommate, who dropped out and undertook the Kolinahr in an attempt to forget Zelaia Gavon-Lin.
