[First Age Future Forgotten Memories]

  • Backstory

Born in Great Forks, her father was a scavenger lord, her mother his business partner in dealing with the Guild. Bearing the mark of both parents, her hair is deep aqua in noon-day, the moon bringing out lighter, blue tints. She keeps her hair to chin length, and folds it behind her ears when it must'n get in the way. At first glance, she could be taken for a male youth, for the armor hides the distinction between genders - the shape of her face, the scar on her cheek, and the hardened look in her eyes betray that she is more than a youth.

Even as a young child, Calinth had a head for numbers and 'pure' equations. So much so that the Guild began to consider taking her into the fold, proper. This set fear deep in the hearts of her parents, and they arranged to slowly move their operations to the far West - besides, they had found a map. A map, that were it accurate, would make them fantastically wealthy - a map woven of jade-steel, the various colors representing the terrain, the coasts picked out in moonsilver, and X marked the spot in pure orichalcum.

So they stole their child away from the Great Library of Great Forks, arranged for copies of texts to be sent by Guild runners for her. By day they washed down rivers, by night, she learned to repair some of the devices her father found.

Delay struck; the Guild created excuses for why they could not leave the greater Nexus area. With anxious patience, they waited - but begged a Lookshyan to train their daughter in the way of the sword, for her protection.

Her mother lifted a writ, had it copied and signed - the Guild heard, and had her assassinated, but was not in time to stop the father and daughter from shipping out on a private merchant's ship. There, Peleps Danic Zawns, an aging escapee Dragonblood from the Realm, took a liking to Calinth, and personally continued her sword-training. He had her cast aside the shield in favor of a parrying dagger - "For on a ship, which ye will be for the next ages if ye follow thee's father t' the West, a shield is dead-weight. A parrying dagger such as this, with a curved blunt hook on the back, is good for catching sword or rigging, an' that'll save thee's life."

Only later did she realize he saw something of his lost son in her lengthening form.

It was a chance accident wherein he scored her cheek; the Dragonblood would not apologize, but said to wear it as a mark of pride, that she had unbalanced him so. Instead, he brought out fine Realm wine, for her and her father, and celebrated that she was now an adult in the eyes of his people, for he must treat her as such next time they sparred. He gifted her his parrying dagger, red jade enlaid with orichalcum, and when they tried to refuse, he simply said that as it had been given to him, so he passed it on, and would say nothing more on it.

That night, naught but several leagues from Wavecrest, their ship was overrun by Lintha. Peleps Danic Zawns took many of them, but the boy-captain of the accurs'd ship had the children swarm him - last she saw, Zawns took the fight to the Lintha ship, fire blazing from him, and cut the grappling lines.

Bloodied, their ship limped to port.

In the time she spent grieving, Calinth practiced the forms he had taught, took lessons from her father, and by candlelight, read the last of the copied texts from Great Forks; the forbidden arts.

Still, her father spread the map before her, the two of them pondering what must be done to claim this fabulous treasure. Without her mother, they lacked resources for proper salvage; perhaps in Coral they would find a backer.

A calculated gamble - and the West repaid them as it oft does. Coral pirates took the ship they were on, and laughingly denied her father's plea to be heard by the lord of the fleet. Their fate, and that of the crew, was declaired; slaves, to be sold to the Guild.

Calinth bit the hand of the pirate holding her, grabbed his sword, and in the dying light of the sun, set on the pirates - death before slavery -

- and the world changed -

She understood what she had read, she understood finally what Zawns had been saying, and she cut the pirates down, even to the last man - but not before her father was spitted before her eyes.

That was then; in the time since, she has found an old groto and cove, still chanelling the essence as of old, and within, what must have been the backup weapon and armor of the ancient solar who claimed this tiny island.

Map in hand, she snaps from her revery, looks to the others on the ship with her...
