History

Born on one of the worlds in the Bloodfall System in Calixis, a world of continual rains of acid and pyrotechnic fogs, where the tiny population huddle in armourcrete bunkers, growing their food in stuttering hydroponics and making forays out to bunkers suddenly derelict to recover supplies (or take them by force), trying to avoid the bladewhales and lungscrews.

No life is easy on a Bloodfall world, and Kormandus's bunker was attacked by less-than-ethical desperate survivors from a nearby settlement. They breached the walls, but Kormandus kept them at bay for three days until the acid rains ate through their hazard suits. When they were gone, he stole their crawler and let the autopilot take him back to their base - they were a raiding party from the one bunker with Imperial officials.

Kormandus was arrested for murder. When the once-a-decade supply ship sent down it's adapted shuttle, he killed his way free and stowed away aboard it. Reports from a barely-populated death world on the edge of the sector take time to filter out, but they do eventually...

Kormandus had to adapt quickly to survive aboard the supply freighter, which had leaky engines and was infested with bilge mutants. It was attacked three times by pirates during his time there. After the first attack, he became a de facto member of the freighter crew. During the second attack, he was leading the patchwork armsmen into battle. On the third attack, he led a counterassault onto the pirate vessel just as the freighter managed to break the docking harpoons and jump into the Warp. Kormandus immediately surrendered and was pressganged onto the crew.

The hardest battle the Jagged Edge ever fought was against the foul xeno. On a reaving patrol, somewhat further outside their normal haunts (as pickings had been slim of late), they encountered a ship of unknown design. To their surprise, rather than attacking or running, the vessel hailed them - and they were confronted by the vile form of a strange, fishlike, grey-skinned alien. The captain talked for a while with this strange creature while the Jagged Edge's augers scanned the ship and pinpointed the vital systems, and then suddenly struck. Determined to take as much tech as possible, the Edge closed with the xeno vessel and initiated a boarding action - a choice that very nearly finished her. The xeno were surprised at first, but turned out to be prepared nonetheless. The fighting was vicious, the tide of battle surging first one way and then the next, with heavy losses on both sides. The xeno had apparently subverted a large number of humans to form part of their crew, and Kormandus and Melliandra Chen managed to slay their way through them to finally reach the command centre and in daring personal combat slay both the grey-faced captain and his power-armoured militant general. This proved the straw which broke the alien morale; increasingly urgent alarums and the panic of the humans tipped off the pirates that the self-destruct had been triggered. It was a mad dash to loot as much xenotech and human slaves as possible and escape - not quite in time to prevent the eventual explosion from almost crippling the Jagged Edge, the repairs to which almost completely counteracted the profit from the illegal cold trade in the xenotech... Kormandus had managed to drag one of the alien warriors aboard, took its strange flight packs, and set about beating the instructions out of it, inspired by the xeno shock-assault tactics using the device. Since that time he made a point of using it as often as possible, even having specialised training areas created for him on one of the decks. As the xeno pack was so much lighter than the heavy Imperial versions, Kormandus found himself wearing it on almost every excursion, the power of flight proving invaluable on dozens of occasions.
