She is a hands on, no-nonsense, 'let's deal with this' -type, with good persuasion skills. One cannot help but like her, as her witty remarks lighten the otherwise so drag atmosphere.

She survived the initial virus with just her strong immunity, but when she realized the whole pandemic, she packed everything that was in the school laboratory (that she could muster) and stuffed them in a van and went hiding in a WW2 bunker her neighbor and friend Carl had prepared (he was planning it for a nuclear apocalypse, but, hey an apocalypse is an apocalypse). She spent the first year within that, listening to radio, doing a bit scavenging etc. But then her neighbor died (old age) and turned. He was like a father to her and she had to shoot through his head. It was time to move on. 'Uncle' Carl's legacy was to teach her to shoot and maintain weaponry, also many survival skills. She is resourceful

Her short-term goal is to gather information and knowledge (from books and people) old knowledge to be preserved and new knowledge about the virus. She is no virologist, so she needs to find a good one, pronto. Her mid-term aim is to gather, build and maintain a new community and teach the children of it, her dream is to reinstate the state of affairs like they were, but for that she needs to first know if the virus is spread from mother to the fetus. If it is, she needs to find untainted women, they will be top on her list.

Laurie goes where she's needed, and is of the Medicine Without Frontiers persuasion in that she'll treat anyone in need of medical treatment, and settle the bill later. The closest thing she has to a tribal affiliation is 'Bolters University, and as they're a survivalist community of academic debate held together with baling twine, lock ties and gaffer tape? It's good to travel, stops her taking a machete to the student council when they won't shut up and deal with things promptly.

Ike was retired from the military shortly before Z-day. After battling some major depression (an Airman is all he'd ever wanted to be and was part of his identity). He started to return to some semblance of normalcy. No longer allowed to fly real aircraft for the military, Ike got into the civilian flight side of things, as a hobbyist. When the outbreak happened things went south surprisingly fast, as the military started to become overwhelmed, and drawn thin, Ike volunteered his services once more. Reporting to the base near his home (Davis Monthan) where he'd previously been stationed as a Helo pilot, Ike was soon pressed into flying service. As time went by and repairs and maintenance became harder and harder on the birds at the base, Ike eventually started using his personal autogyro for missions. Eventually even ladybird started to fall into disrepair, so with the help of the remaining crew chiefs and maintenance personnel, he started to replace parts with what was available in the Boneyard. Now he's been sent as an attache, from the last of the ranking military personnel to help the convoy make it to its destination.
