Clavis Morden
Standing no more than 1.55m tall, of slender build and looking much younger than her 29 years by solar reckoning Clavis Morden isn't the most impressive figure in a physical way. Perpetually tousled curly blonde hair and blue eyes shining with curiosity behind slim duralumin-rimmed spectacles complete the impression of unseasoned youth. Few who do not know her would consider her someone to take seriously or even a threat if not for the formal black robes with the insignia of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, the ominous gravitas of which makes most people reconsider that first impression. But even without that chilling reminder the wise man would be less hasty to dismiss Clavis. Behind those blue eyes a sharp intellect is at work and although inexperienced she has been trained by one of the best. For her part Clavis often enjoys the completely different misperceptions brought on by no more than her choice of clothes.

No petitions for restitution are allowable in case of injury or death during an investigation if the consultant has not taken proper steps to ensure their own safety. As Quaestor-Inferius Malus Ravion has been called for consultation a number of times over the years Clavis has had to take 'proper steps' as well, especially since some Arbitrators are in her opinion entirely too careless with their shock mauls. So laying down her savings of three years Clavis has acquired a mesh body glove to protect herself - no true Lathe Mesh, but a good enough imitation.

Well maintained with proper care and respect it looks like it will serve well for many years still. Its machine spirit is loyal and experienced, but it takes a few seconds to awake with a high-pitched whine after the safety is thumbed off. The wooden parts of the grip are recently renewed and have burned-in inscriptions: The Emperor Protects and the Imperial Aquila on one side, Stay safe, my disciple, and shine brightly along the personal sigil of Malus Ravion on the other. As a graduation present from her teacher and mentor Clavis treasures the weapon and carries it with her more often than strictly necessary.

Background

Clavis was born 29 years ago on board the IWS Lightbringer, a Battlefleet Calixis war ship of almost suspiciously bland reputation on deep patrol on the fringes of Imperial space. Her mother, Deatrix Morden, was a well-respected proactive security officer (2nd class), but her father Zarkov carried the heavy burden of the psyker talent (some would say 'curse'). Nonetheless he was a faithful Imperial citizen, striving to carry out his duty to the God-Emperor of Mankind and employing his abilities - sanctioned, of course - to serve and protect the Lightbringer in whatever mysterious ways he might. Clavis also had two elder brothers, strong Attilas (7 years older) and gentle Carus (2 years older), to shield her against the superstitious fear and loathing from the other children in segment-daycare. In time both Attilas and Carus manifested psychic talents of their own and under Zarkov's guidance learned to control them. Some may wonder how a loving family could arise from witches and murderers, but to Clavis it seemed only natural that Attilas could move his toy soldiers with his mind, that Carus always knew how people really felt, and that mother was often gone for days or even weeks at a time. That was just how things were and if other children told different stories, well, father had told her that these things had to be a family secret and that other people wouldn't understand, so maybe it was like that for them as well?

It was at age six that the nightmares began. Sporadic and only during sleep shifts at first but more regularly over the months and during work shifts as well: Visions of being surrounded by arcane machinery, being part of that machinery, sometimes being consumed by it. Of being subjected to anbaric shocks, pricked with needles full of strange fluids, of being poked and probed with unnatural apparati. Knifes cutting into her body and mind, vivisecting, trimming, shaping. And all through it those towering figures in white, distant and all-powerful and uncaring. Sometimes she'd even lose time with nothing to account for the events of those hours but vague pains and more nightmares. If not for the support of her family the young Clavis may well have retreated into insanity, but Carus, Attilas and Zarkov were there for her with love, compassion and, she sometimes thought, a fearful unspoken understanding. Whether they too had been plagued with these visions she never found out, though if like herself they were unable to speak clearly of the experience it would explain the wordless and unquestioning support.

With eight years, the nightmares having become less frequent again, Clavis began to have presentiments, feeling in advance that mother would be returning from 'business' the next day or that school would be an unpleasant experience again today. Then as she became aware of it the presentiments turned into full precognitive episodes, her anger would make the walls tremble and her fear terrify half the hab segment. The sudden and uncontrolled first manifestation of psychics powers is perhaps the most dangerous phase a psyker goes through and many are damaged by the trauma or even worse, corrupted. Here it became apparent that her father had been either very wise or precognizant for many of the verses and little games of concentration he and her brothers had taught her turned out to be psykana control exercises. In this way just like Attilas and Carus before her Clavis made her way through that traumatic first phase. And just in time for the Lightbringer had after a multi-year patrol returned close enough to civilization to transfer all her newly found psykers to one of the Black Ships.

Thus began the pilgrimage on board the Semper Vigilans CVII. As is common for the Black Ships and perhaps even intended the conditions and surroundings during the journey were horrific, but to Clavis who had survived the living nightmare and Carus who'd been assigned the same cell block as her it wasn't as terrible as it was for some - at least they had each other. After long months in the Immaterium - several years in the real world - the Semper Vigilans CVII completed its latest circle and Clavis had arrived on Holy Terra there to be tested and evaluated. Oh what glory, the holiest of holies, the one and only Terra! Being found worthy of serving the Imperium of Man as a sanctioned psyker, learning the psykana from the great masters of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, spending day and night knowing that the God-Emperor himself sits on his Golden Throne on the very same holy planet! And only a small drop of sadness marred the otherwise so uplifting time on Earth, not knowing what fate had awaited her brothers upon arriving. Trained, conditioned, subjected to the Rite of Ten-Thousand Needles, and finally sanctioned Clavis was ranked a promising subject, not least perhaps because of the abnormally strong defense against psychic intrusion she'd displayed. Not even the Delta grade psyker assigned to test her had managed to find more than empty darkness in the depths of her mind. It was perhaps only natural, he'd said, that growing up in a family of witches a girl would develop powerful defenses to keep her privacy. After receiving high marks on the mental aptitude test for Adeptus service Clavis was at 21 solar standard (biological age 14) directed to serve the Adeptus Astra Telepathica directly.

Assigned as apprentice-tertiary to Quaestor-Inferius Malus Ravion of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica Calixis, Internal Revision Section 13, 'Sanctionite Morden' began her training in earnest. Adeptus lore and history, dealing with the paperwork, proper bearing and attitude, and of course employing her talents rather than just keeping them under control. The lessons were manifold. All in the context of Malus Ravion's work, of course: Identifying manifest psykers, determining latent potential, finding bright talents before corruption can claim them. Assessing conformity to regulations in Adeptus installations, auditing records, investigating complaints. Advising persons of importance on matters of psychic security, consulting for the Adeptus Arbites when requested. Clavis took to the training with great energy - finally a chance to prove herself, to do her part for the Imperium of Man and Him On Earth. And to show master Ravion, who quickly became something of a father figure to her, that the time and effort he'd invested in her would not be in vain. In just six years, well ahead of the average time, she graduated to apprentice-primary and under the proud eyes of master Ravion gained the additional qualification for fieldwork (supervised) soon after.

Not all things she began brought fruit however. A relationship with the other apprentice-secondary at the time, a young man by the name of Jo Castilan from Hive Ambulon, turned rocky over his recklessness in drawing upon the Warp.

  • Dating her fellow apprentice-secondary turns out badly when he loses control and starts to mutate
  • Commended for loyal service by Quaestor-Ordinarius Malus Ravion after picking up on the first thread to unravel the so-called Kaltstahl Heresy on <Planet>
