Background

The mild-mannered man commonly called 'Ox' (阿牛) even by his Sleeper acquaintances runs a traditional Chinese medicine clinic out of a gently-decaying Chinese clan association. In his youth, he proved capable in school, but being too soft-hearted he soon started doing favours for the wrong people, and quickly became involved in one of Singapore's youth gangs, descended from the great Triads that once ran the small island-city before the coming of the British. The ritual-rich atmosphere of the gang triggered something in the young man, and he began to see scenes of the spiritual overlaid with those of the real. His senior officers wore the visages of fearsome war-deities, and his foes assumed the semblance of uncouth demons. His ability to see to the truth of things put him in great danger: he immediately identified a spy for a rival gang by the painted visage he mistook for the man's face. In order to silence him, the spy drew him aside. What was in reality a water-tower in a remote location Ox saw as a tree, dead but magnificent, punching through the sky. At its summit, the traitor turned on Ox and stabbed him.

To little effect. When the knife was withdrawn from the flesh of Ox's stomach, the flesh torn in its wake sealed as if no wound had ever been. Ox weathered a rain of knife-blows with a benevolent smile, glassy-eyed, as his body shed injuries like raindrops. And then he reached out and casually crushed his assailant's trachea.

Spying a sole sprig pushing its way through the cracked floor of the water-tank, Ox filled his hands with his victim's blood and watered the shoot with it. It grew within the space of heartbeats, and when it flowered it revealed to him the truth of his own nature and the world around him, confirming what he's always known: that reality is an illusion, a manifestation of Mara, that can only be surpassed through great sacrifice and great heroism.

Quitting the gang with the blessing of his superiors, he took up the study of Chinese medicine. He still treats members of his former gang for free, and invokes the blessings of the gods on their activities. He also witnesses the oaths given by new members, and ensures that they will never betray their blood brothers.
