Lael was sent to confirm or deny those statements. "Go Male-child, and return with Gelrir, or return not at all." Certain now that the mother superior just wanted Lael dead, he did not argue and took off into the darkness. He traveled quite a while before happening upon the group the house was looking for. But they were not headed home, he could in theory just return home to report they're not dead, but he feared he would not get such information out before being punished for not bringing the priestess back.
